current | 05:13, 20 July 2024 | 1,574 × 2,035 (578 KB) | Tdadamemd | Many mods. Adding underscores to military branch as indication of COMBAT experience. Adding 'meatball' for those working with NASA when hired. Chapman & Llewellyn were the only 2 non-US citizens. Slayton & Fullerton w/significant heavy experience, unlike typical fighter pilots. Etc.
10:18, 19 July 2024 | 1,574 × 2,035 (566 KB) | Tdadamemd | Joe Henry Engle died on Wednesday last week at the age of 91. Other mods to X-15 table, etc. Grp6&7 columns changed so year of death now lines up with year of birth. Engle was the last surviving X-15 pilot. The only one to roll it. He came very close to walking on the Moon, having trained as Gene Cernan's LMP. His ALT/STS-2 crewmate, Dick Truly, died earlier this year. Engle & Sturkow are the only ones to fly more than one type of winged vehicle into space.
10:05, 11 June 2024 | 1,574 × 2,035 (560 KB) | Tdadamemd | Bill Anders died on Friday, June 7th upon crashing his aircraft while attempting a Split-S maneuver without sufficient altitude. His one and only spaceflight was Apollo 8, where the crew members were the first to travel beyond Low Earth Altitude, soon after TLI becoming the first to see the whole Earth on December 21, 1968. The historical photos of that event have been fully ignored. 3 days later, he took the one photo that became most famous, Earthrise, on Dec 24th, while orbiting the Moon.
10:19, 16 April 2024 | 1,574 × 2,035 (560 KB) | Tdadamemd | Tom Stafford, first to pilot a Lunar Module around the Moon, died last month at age 93. Also, the month prior to that, Dick Truly, the first of 3 astronauts* to become NASA Administrator, died at age 86. * - 4 when counting Acting Administrator Fred Gregory. Truly flew two Shuttle orbital missions, as well as Enterprise ALT Approach & Landing Tests. Stafford flew 2 Gemini rendezvous missions, taking over for See & Bassett as prime on that docking flight. His final spaceflight was on Apol...
06:29, 27 November 2023 | 1,574 × 2,035 (560 KB) | Tdadamemd | Within this past month, 2 more lunar astronauts have died, including the first commander, Frank Borman, age 95, and TK Mattingly, age 87, of Apollo 13 fame, eventually reaching the Moon 2 years later. TK along with John Young were the only lunar astronauts to have flown the Shuttle into space (Haise & Engle both coming very close to that as well). 8 of 24 lunar astronauts are still alive. 2/3rds are no longer with us.
00:38, 27 September 2023 | 1,574 × 2,035 (559 KB) | Tdadamemd19 | Karol Bobko, 1st USAF Academy graduate in space, died last month at age 85. CORRECTION to his birth month. Other minor tweaks.
02:30, 4 January 2023 | 1,574 × 2,035 (559 KB) | Tdadamemd19 | Adding year of death for Walt Cunningham, who died today.
12:57, 18 October 2022 | 1,574 × 2,035 (559 KB) | Tdadamemd19 | Don Lind died on August 30th, 2022. And Jim McDivitt died on October 13th, 2022. Age 92 & 93, respectively.
06:12, 4 October 2021 | 1,574 × 2,035 (559 KB) | Tdadamemd19 | Philip Chapman had died at age 86. A change which should have been made prior to Michael Collins back in April. Steven Weinberg, who also died this year, was his PhD thesis advisor.
00:30, 29 April 2021 | 1,574 × 2,035 (559 KB) | Tdadamemd19 | Michael Collins died age 90. First to fly solo around the Moon while not in formation (no other vehicle orbiting). Born in Rome, died in Naples. |
