redundant class parameter & WP Fraternities and Sororities

[edit]

Rublamb has reverted several pages that I've tried to clear from Category:WikiProject banners with redundant class parameter (319), adding the pages back into that category ([1][2][3]), with the summary "this shows up as unknown class in personal and wp reports; adding class has solved this glitch".

Rublamb, the typical solution would be to fix the glitch in your personal report rather than modifying the live page. Also, what wp reports are you referring to? Those probably need to be updated/fixed as well, as they might not account for {{WikiProject banner shell}}'s many relatively recent improvements like class auto-detection for certain page types. If that's not possible, then perhaps {{WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities}} needs to be included in Category:Custom class masks of WikiProject banners (18), but I think that should be a last resort.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:33, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I'd too like to see the reports. Gonnym (talk) 13:40, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that any glitch in the report (or if the report is fine, then glitches in the template code somewhere) should be fixed rather than applying non-standard hacks to make them work. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 16:27, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have reverted my changes to Hot Feet (disambiguation), Delta Psi (disambiguation), and St. Anthony Hall (disambiguation). The easiest place to see the issue is my Pages Created because the assessment type resets quickly. The three disambiguation pages in question show up as assessment "unknown" unless "class=disambiguation" is added. Other similar pages are correctly listed as having a "disambiguation" assessment, suggesting that the report is fine and that the issue is with these three articles. I recall that this happened after a bot update to these pages but that may have simply been the removal of redundant classes. I have reviewed these three several times and cannot find an issue. I would really appreciate another set of eyes. It is not a big deal but is annoying.
At one point, these three were also showing up as NA (unassessed) on the standard WikiProject article report, shared on WikiProject Fraternities and Sororities and below. Recently, there were maybe 25 articles with various assessments in this report as unassessed; these were all fixed with a recent batch update. I assume these three were also fixed at that time or in a previous update but I don't know for sure because they had a redundant class at the time. Since it takes a day for this report to refresh, it is not as easy to test.

Sometimes all a page needs is a null edit to have it updated. I think this was the issue here also. --Gonnym (talk) 19:07, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gonnym: What is a null edit? Rublamb (talk) 21:36, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Rublamb: See WP:NULLEDIT   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  21:59, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Gonnym: That fixed the issue. Thanks so much for the suggestion. Rublamb (talk) 22:17, 5 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Null listas removes pages from tracking cat

[edit]

For example on Talk:Avitus II of Clermont. Editors often leave a blank |listas= for future editors to populate, as I did. However, the probability of future editors discovering the page drops dramatically if not stored in Category:Biography articles without listas parameter.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  16:22, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The code that handles that is found inside Template:WikiProject Biography. Gonnym (talk) 16:29, 16 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

3 WikiProjects to merge

[edit]

Could someone make the necessary changes to the to-be-parent WikiProject templates, and then I'll work on merging transclusions of all the children?

  1. merge {{WikiProject Thomas}} into {{WikiProject Animation}} via |thomas= & |thomas-importance= (TfD)
  2. merge {{WikiProject Open Access}} into {{WikiProject Open}} via |access= & |access-importance= (TfD)
  3. merge {{WikiProject Bradford}} into {{WikiProject Yorkshire}} via |Bradford= (no importance param) (TfD)

~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  17:16, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Gonnym: Are you working on this? CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 19:59, 23 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've done only the first (which also needed category renaming). Gonnym (talk) 08:06, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do the other two then. CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {CX}) 12:46, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@CX Zoom: there's an issue with {{WikiProject Open}}, where {{WikiProject Open Access}}'s cats don't show on a post-merger page: see before & after. Can you fix? This is true for mainspace as well.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  18:32, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The banner is marked as inactive. There are no categories for inactive banners. Do note though, that once you change that, you'll need to create dozens of new red categories. Gonnym (talk) 08:26, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I see. {{WikiProject Open}} is correct as-is then, since Wikipedia:WikiProject Open/Open access task force is also tagged inactive.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  10:57, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz: Category:Thomas articles by importance was correctly moved to Category:Thomas & Friends articles by importance, but then Category:Thomas & Friends articles by importance was deleted?   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  12:41, 27 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
 Done! Thanks all!   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  14:11, 28 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

User talk:UBX and tracking categories

[edit]

User talk:UBX/Template:BeginningWiki, while in userspace, is one of the user pages that we should be tracking (and are tracking in other areas). Currently all of the banners are outside the shell but the tracking category isn't activated. Gonnym (talk) 12:45, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Is this related to the valid_users setting in Module:WikiProject banner/config? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:13, 9 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's in the valid users list. Gonnym (talk) 08:04, 10 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Could request parameters be ignored & tracked on detected redirects?

[edit]

Perhaps in Category:WikiProject request parameters on redirects for followup, so they don't pollute their respective request cats like Category:Wikipedia requested images? Parameters include |needs-image=, |needs-infobox=, |needs-attention=, |pref-photo=, |pref-photo-2=, |person-photo=, |needs-PD-image=, |screenshot=, |screenshots=, and many other variants.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  11:33, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Support but make it more wider. Any non-article or draft should be included. There is no reason why categories, dab pages or templates (for example) need these also. Gonnym (talk) 11:42, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Even better   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  11:44, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
