Natiq Malikzada
[edit]Natiq Malikzada is an Afghan journalist and human rights researcher based in the United Kingdom. He has worked with regional and international media outlets and contributed to civil society initiatives focused on human rights, education, and political reform in Afghanistan.
Career
[edit]Malikzada began working as a freelance journalist in Afghanistan in 2017, contributing to various national and international media outlets in both Farsi and English. His reporting has covered topics related to Afghan politics, human rights, and extremism.[1]
From 2022 to 2024, he served as a reporter for Al Aan TV, a Dubai-based media outlet, where he covered developments in Afghanistan and Iran remotely.[2]
Malikzada is also the founder of Better Afghanistan, a civil society initiative launched in 2020. According to the organization, it focuses on promoting democracy, pluralism, and educational access for Afghan girls, particularly in response to the Taliban’s restrictions on female education. He was kidnapped in 2015 by religious extremist groups for his work against religious extremism.[3]
He has been involved in digital human rights research through the University of Essex Human Rights Centre, working with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and Amnesty International’s Digital Verification Unit. His work has included research on detention practices in Afghanistan and open-source investigations of human rights violations.[4]
Media Contributions
[edit]Malikzada has authored opinion articles and commentary in international outlets. In 2023, he wrote an analysis for *The Diplomat* examining the impact of the U.S.-Taliban agreement on Afghanistan’s stability.[5]
He also contributed to the *Atlantic Council’s South Asia Source* blog with a piece reflecting on Afghanistan’s political trajectory following the Taliban’s return to power.[6]
In addition to written publications, Malikzada has participated in televised interviews discussing the Taliban’s governance and the state of civil resistance. Interviews aired by Afghanistan International in 2023 addressed the conditions of Afghan human rights defenders and the response of the international community.[7]
Incident in the UK
[edit]In early 2024, Malikzada was assaulted outside a Home Office-run asylum hotel in Aldershot, Hampshire. Two individuals were arrested in connection with the attack.[8]
The incident was reported by *The Independent*, which also noted prior concerns raised by asylum seekers regarding safety and accommodation conditions in the hotel.[9]
