The proposed article does not have sufficient content to require an article of its own, but it could be merged into the existing article at Australian Football League. Since anyone can edit Wikipedia, you are welcome to add that information yourself. Thank you.

Submission declined on 13 December 2024 by Tesleemah (talk). Article needs more references for verification, statistics about Australian football league should be a subtopic under AFL if there are no other references available Declined by Tesleemah 4 months ago. | ![]() |
Comment: This draft is neutral in tone, references are okay, but is not substantial enough to have a full article on its own (at least not yet). I think it would be better suited for the content of this draft to be part of the Australian Football League article. NeoGaze (talk) 18:57, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi NeoGaze
- Thanks for your feedback! I have looked extensively at the AFL wiki and I can't find a place for it to fit. It's an emerging (and somewhat contentious) agenda, but has seen a significant increase in favour in younger fans of the sport, given its intrinsically novel and inclusive nature. The purpose for this particular article is that it would be contributed to and developed over time - from people with greater access and resources than I. The VFL exists as a completely separate historical competition when considering the additions of teams from other states and leagues, each with their own history. There is an inherent bias and exclusion - an example being the success of a team, such as Port Adelaide, which has won 36 premierships in the SANFL, but that history is ignored because of the Victorian bias to only include premierships from the VFL.
- I believe this page needs its standalone space to give some equity to what the competition is - national and inclusive
- Thanks!
Comment: Please give a introduction about these tallies.Citations are usually not on the subtitle, instead, they are at the end of each sentences. -Lemonaka 07:59, 14 January 2025 (UTC)
In 1990, the Victorian Football League was renamed as the Australian Football League (AFL) due to its national expansion, incorporating teams from states other than Victoria. This also coincided with the more equitable approaches to team development, such as the AFL Draft (introduced in 1986), Salary Cap (introduced in 1987) and abolition of the existing zone-based recruiting that had created vastly unbalanced periods of competition and disproportionate wealth and success amongst the clubs.[1] As a result, there has been an increase in public and media attention to the relevancy and fairness of AFL-era statistics,[2] in preference over the inherent historic nepotism of state-based leagues.[3]
