Akis Cheung is the founder and managing director of THE Education Academy Group, which is a Hong Kong-based tutoring centre that focuses on helping students with mathematics and economics at a high-school level. As someone who was never a strong mathematician in his childhood, Cheung is determined to help students struggling with it, to ultimately help them find a way to enjoy and understand the subject.[1]
Education
[edit]Cheung attended and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2012, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in the field of Actuarial Science. During his time in university, he engaged in several extracurriculars and clubs, with founding the school's Economics and Global Affairs Alliance being one of his most notable achievements.[2]
Career
[edit]2014 - 2015: KINETIC
[edit]In 2014, Cheung joined the asset management firm KINETIC as an analyst, to help with their economic operations, such as investment in real estate, distressed assets and non-performing loans. Due to unbeknownst reasons, Cheung left the company after only a year, opting to take his talents somewhere else.[2][3]
2015–2017: Eatpal
[edit]After his departure from KINETIC in 2015, Cheung chose to instead start and run a firm from the ground up, as he ultimately joined forces with his friend, Anthony Li, to create the mobile app Eatpal.[4]
Eatpal was a mobile app designed to build a membership through two key features: its ability to provide food recommendations and offer restaurant discounts for members. Their business structure revolved around partnering with Hong Kong based restaurants and posting about them on both social media as well as their mobile app. By offering these discounts and advertising the restaurants through their different channels, both the partner restaurants and Eatpal would be able to thrive. However, after 2 years of success, Eatpal was shut down.[2][5]
2017-Present: THEdu
[edit]In 2017, Cheung made the decision to steer his career towards education, combining his knowledge from his previous occupations as an analyst and entrepreneur to assist him in his new journey. He founded the tutoring centre THE Education Academy Group, in hopes of sharing and passing on his extensive knowledge in economics and mathematics to the youth.[2]
THE Education Academy Group is an organisation founded in 2017 that assists high school students taking internationally recognised curriculum, such as the the International Baccalaureate, IGCSE/GCSE, A-Levels and more, with their services mainly being catered towards students needing support in economics and mathematics. Their approach to learning is undoubtedly unique, as rather than purely focusing on results, Cheung has stated that they also aim to show students how to apply their knowledge to real-life situations.
In 2021, Cheung was able to pioneer and lead his company to an award identifying THE Education Academy Limited as one of the Most Valuable Companies in Hong Kong. He shared the importance of maintaining good mental health and meeting the individual needs of different students, allowing them to feel comfortable and to bring out their best capabilities.[6]
