Bendy and the Ink Machine is an upcoming horror film based on the 2017 indie video game of the same name. The film is directed by André Øvredal[1] and produced by Radar Pictures in collaboration with Double Down Pictures. It was officially announced in December 2023[2]. As of now, the release date has not been confirmed, but the film is expected to be released in 2026[3].
Development
[edit]The film adaptation of Bendy and the Ink Machine was first announced on December 25, 2023, by the official Bendy and the Ink Machine social media accounts. The project is being directed by Norwegian filmmaker André Øvredal, known for his previous works The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016) and Trollhunter (2010). Øvredal is tasked with translating the game's atmosphere of mystery and horror to the big screen. Radar Pictures, a film production company known for its work on films such as Jumanji (1995) and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), is producing the film alongside Double Down Pictures. The companies have stated their intent to maintain the eerie tone and narrative style of the original video game while adapting it for cinema.[4][5]
Plot
[edit]The plot of the film is expected to follow the storyline of the original video game. The narrative centers around Henry Stein, a former animator at the now-abandoned Joey Drew Studios. Henry returns to the studio years after his departure, only to find that it has become a twisted and haunted place. The once-innocent cartoon character Bendy has turned into a malevolent figure, and Henry must uncover the dark secrets behind the studio's downfall while trying to survive the horrors within. The film will likely retain the game's blend of mystery, horror, and supernatural elements, set within a cartoon animation studio gone awry. It is expected to explore the origins of Bendy and the strange, monstrous creations that haunt the studio.
Production
[edit]The film's production was announced alongside a statement confirming that it would remain faithful to the original game's themes of horror and mystery. The production team, led by Radar Pictures[6] and Double Down Pictures[7], has not disclosed the full cast as of yet. However, the adaptation is expected to feature both new characters and some familiar ones from the game. Director André Øvredal has emphasized the importance of taking the necessary time to ensure a high-quality adaptation, noting that the project will not be rushed in order to do justice to the source material.
Release
[edit]As of April 2025[8], no official release date has been set for the film. However, it is anticipated that the movie will be released sometime in 2026. Fans of the game have expressed interest in the film's development, and updates on the project are being shared periodically through social media channels associated with the franchise.
