Ceiling Demons performing in 2025 at the Forum Music Center, Darlington, United Kingdom

Ceiling Demons[1][2]are an English alternative art-rap / spoken word band formed in Leeds, England in 2012 by twins Simon Harrison (vocals, guitar), Dan Harrison (vocals) and George Ruston (vocals, music). The band's current line-up features Simon & Dan Harrison, Chris Shaw (guitar), Sam Reed (drums) with live on stage artist Tim Coomber.[3] They have emerged as a critically acclaimed musical force blending Conscious hip-hop < sensibilities with highly expressive and complex lyrics that detail their experience of loss and need to find meaning. Following the loss of close friends, Ceiling Demons are staunch advocates of charities including CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably)[4] who are dedicated to preventing male suicides, identified as the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK.

A cornerstone of Ceiling Demons is their focus on mental health in their lyrics and charitable work. "Mental health has long been a theme that we have addressed in our music and Snakes & Ladders continues this tradition. Having birthed our project out of bereavement and our own experiences with anxiety and depression, we try to champion remedies such as creation, speaking, accepting, self-care and self-healing as medicines through music."[1]

The DIY collective are known for their emotionally charged work, their use of masks & their unique live performances that encapsulate music, art & the human condition. They tour the UK extensively and have released 3 albums, numerous EPs & singles, as well as an increasing catalogue of promotional videos, including videos directed by Ryan W. Martin and Callum Scott-Dyson . Musical collaborations have included Ceschi Ramos and Lee "Scratch" Perry.

History

[edit]

Early stages and the Traits era (2011–2012)

[edit]

Simon (Psy) and Dan Harrison's first musical outings was in a short-lived band called Traits in 2011-2012. At the same time George Ruston was writing his own material but also performed alongside friend and hip-hop collaborator Matt Robinson, aka Acts. Ceiling Demons emerged as a collaboration between Simon (Psy) Harrison, brother Dan Harrison who became the band's principle vocalists, and multi-instrumentalist George Ruston who provided the band with its hip-hop foundations. Artist and podcaster Tim Coomber[5] joined in 2013, and provided artwork for all releases as well live 'on stage' art.

The Ceiling Demons Emerge (2013–2021)

[edit]

Chris Shaw (guitar) and Sam Reed (drums) completed the lineup. Along the way they have been supplemented by vocalists such as Rosey Purkiss McEndoo[6] and Françoise Harvey, as well as bassists, programmers and celtic visionary Andy Lawrenson on violin.

Ceiling Demons have released 3 albums: Dual Sides[7] (December 18, 2013); Nil[8] (September 22,2017); Snakes & Ladders[9] (September 22, 2021) - an eclectic 13-track album which featured violinist and bereavement therapist Andy Lawrenson,[10] guest vocals from Lee "Scratch" Perry, 'one of Jamaica's finest and most unpredictable record producers, as well as a much recorded' who died (29 Aug 2021, age 85)[11] soon after completing 2 tracks for the band, and folk singer-songwriter Françoise Harvey (aka Zarahruth)[12]

Ceiling Demons (2021–current)

Since the departure of George Ruston, the band have continue as a 4-piece: Psy & Dan Harrison (lyrics and vocals); Chris Shaw (guitar), and Sam Reed (drums).
