Bhure Lal has been the Chairman of the Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority (EPCA) since 1998, tackling all types of pollution, including water, industrial, and Yamuna pollution. He is also a member of the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee on Sealing.
Born and raised in Delhi, Bhure Lal is an alumnus of SGTB Khalsa College, University of Delhi. He began his career in the Army before joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Uttar Pradesh cadre. As District Magistrate of Allahabad and Varanasi, and later as Secretary to the Chief Minister and Vigilance Secretary, he became known for his strong administrative skills.
At the central level, he served as Director of the Enforcement Directorate, cracking down on major FERA violations. He later held key positions including Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s office, Secretary in the Ministries of Tribal Affairs and Coordination & Public Grievances, Chairman of the Food Corporation of India, and Secretary of the Central Vigilance Commission. He retired as a Member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).[1]
A PhD in Economics, Bhure Lal has diverse interests and a rich career spanning governance, finance, vigilance, and environmental policy. He authored Monstrous Face of ISI and Judicial Activism & Accountability, reflecting his deep concerns about national security and institutional accountability. A known anti-corruption crusader, he continues to work for the upliftment of marginalized communities and speaks at various public forums.
