Eric Saumure (born 28 April 1989)[1] is a Canadian Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA)[4] and entrepreneur based in Ottawa. He is the co-founder and principal of Zenbooks, a cloud-based accounting firm recognized among Ottawa’s fastest-growing companies[5] and listed in The Globe and Mail’s Top Growing Companies of 2024.[6] In 2023, Saumure launched a national petition calling on the Canada Revenue Agency to extend the personal tax filing deadline during a federal strike, attracting over 30,000 signatures and widespread media coverage in both English and French-language outlets.[7][8][9] He was named to Ottawa’s Forty Under 40 list in 2024[3], and currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.[10]
Early life and education
[edit]Saumure attended Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology, earning a diploma in Accounting and Business Administration in 2010.[2]
Career
[edit]He was a Senior Consultant at KPMG Canada from October 2012 to February 2016.[11][12] In May 2015, Saumure co‑founded Zenbooks, a cloud‑based accounting and advisory firm that modernizes small‑business bookkeeping by vetting and integrating top cloud applications to deliver real‑time monthly financial reports and weekly or monthly advisory check‑ins.[13] Under his leadership, Zenbooks was ranked #244 on The Globe and Mail's Top Growing Companies of 2024 list, based on 165% three‑year revenue growth.[14]
He served as Chief Financial Officer for Mark Sutcliffe’s Ottawa mayoral campaign in 2022.[15][16] In June 2024, Saumure was appointed to the Board of Directors of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.[17][10]
Advocacy
[edit]On 25 April 2023, Saumure launched a petition on Change.org calling on the Canada Revenue Agency to extend the personal tax‑filing deadline to 15 June amid a PSAC strike; it had over 25,000 signatures by early afternoon.[7] He said: “I kind of see this as if you’re writing an exam in school but the professor just doesn’t let you ask questions…And if you make a mistake, there’s a financial penalty. And so that’s just not fair for Canadians.”[7]
The petition received coverage in CBC News,[18] CTV News,[19] and CP24,[20] Radio-Canada,[9] La Voix de l'Est,[21] and L'Acadie Nouvelle.[22]
Media coverage
[edit]The petition launched by Saumure on 25 April 2023 quickly amassed over 30,000 signatures in under a week and attracted extensive national attention. Major outlets such as The Canadian Press[23] and CBC News[24], along with a CBC video report[25], CTV News (“call‑centre wait” story[26] and petition overview[27]), CP24[28], and Radio‑Canada[29] all ran stories naming him as the campaign’s organizer.
