FlyNow Aviation GmbH is an Austrian aviation company developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, marketed under the name "eCopter." The company is based in Salzburg and is focused on cargo and passenger transport applications within the urban air mobility sector.
History
[edit]Foundation
[edit]FlyNow Aviation GmbH was founded in 2019 by Jürgen Greil and Yvonne Winter. Greil previously worked in the automotive industry and contributed to the development of the BMW i3 and i8[1]. Winter has a background in industrial management and business development[2]. The company’s aim is to offer cost-efficient and scalable eVTOL systems for urban transport[3].
2022
[edit]In 2022, FlyNow Aviation conducted testing using a 1:2 scale prototype to validate its flight software[2]. That same year, it received approval from AustroControl in the “specific category SAIL II,” allowing for test operations under EASA regulations[3].
2023
[edit]In 2023, the company carried out flight tests with a full-scale prototype at Salzburg Airport[4][5]. FlyNow also participated in COP28 in Dubai, presenting its prototype as part of a sustainability-focused innovation showcase[6].
2024
[edit]An updated eCopter design was introduced in 2024, created by Mikhail Klimov, a former BMW designer[7]. The revised version included improvements in stability, aerodynamics, and cooling[7][8]. The company reported conducting 189 flight tests throughout the year[8].
FlyNow partnered with Skyroads to establish the Sky Alliance of Automated Air Mobility (SALAAM), a non-profit organization focused on infrastructure for advanced air mobility (AAM)[8][9][10].
In May 2024, FlyNow signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA), the National Industrial Development Center (NIDC), and SALAAM to support regulatory frameworks for eVTOL operations in anticipation of Expo 2030[11][12][13][14][15][16].
In late 2024, FlyNow established a new company FlyNow Arabia Ltd.[17] in Riyadh as part of its expansion strategy, with plans to set up a production to support both domestic and international markets[8][14][18][19].

The FlyNow eCopter is a family of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a coaxial rotor configuration. The aircraft are intended for passenger and cargo applications[19][20].
Variants include:
- Single-seater – for individual transport.
- Double-seater – for two passengers.
- Cargo version – for payloads up to 200 kg[19].
- Firefighter - equipped for wildfire support missions[21].
All variants use a modular construction designed to reduce mechanical complexity and lower maintenance costs[20].
Technical characteristics
[edit]The eCopter uses a lithium-ion battery-powered electric propulsion system[22]. The maximum speed is reported as 130 km/h, with a range of up to 50 kilometers[19].
The airframe uses lightweight carbon fiber composites. The aircraft features a fixed skid landing gear[22].
Flight control and operating concept
[edit]The aircraft is designed to operate on pre-defined flight paths using an automated guidance system[5][16][20]. Operations are monitored through a centralized flight management system [13].
Safety and redundancy systems
[edit]Each rotor is powered by four electric motors for redundancy[3][23]. Obstacle detection and avoidance capabilities are included[23].
Noise and environmental impact
[edit]The aircraft produces an estimated noise level of 55 dB at 150 meters altitude[3] and emits no direct CO₂ during operation[23].
Certification
[edit]In December 2022, FlyNow Aviation received certification in the "specific category SAIL II" from AustroControl, allowing for flight testing under EASA regulations[3].
The company has expressed interest in achieving full certification under EASA CS-27 for helicopters[5], potentially enabling earlier market entry[24][25].
Awards and recognition
[edit]FlyNow Aviation received the “Most Promising Start-Up Award” at the 2024 Autonomous e-Mobility Forum in Doha[26], and the “Born Global Champions Award” from the Austrian Chamber of Commerce[27].
