Prof. Hagai Perets (Hebrew: חגי פרץ; born 22 April 1977) is a professor of Astrophysics in the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, the head of the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology faculty union, and the head of the המועצה המתאמת של ארגון הסגל הבכיר.[1]

Education

[edit]

Hagai Perets graduated from Misgav Regional Highschool in 1995. During his highschool and IDF service years Prof. Perets completed a BA degree in Mathematics and Science in the Open University of Israel. In 2001-2004 Prof. Perets enrolled in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and performed his MSc degree under the mentorship of Prof. Ofer Biham. During his years there he also participated in the humanities excellence program "Amirim Ruach". In 2009 he received a PhD degree from the Weizmann Institute of Science under the mentorship of the late Prof. Tal Alexander.[2]

Research Contributions

[edit]

Perets has made several significant contributions to astrophysics, including:

  • Theoretical modeling of planet formation around binary stars.
  • Work on the role of dynamical interactions in star clusters.
  • Contributions to the study of stellar collisions and mergers.
  • Research into Type Ia supernovae and their possible progenitor systems.

His work often combines analytical modeling, numerical simulations, and observational data.

Public Engagement and Views

[edit]

Perets is also active in science education and frequently speaks publicly on matters of science and academia in Israel. In his role as the Technion He has been outspoken on matters affecting academic freedom.

As an artist

[edit]

Perets has been composing and writing poetry and short stories since childhood. His first poetry book "The wind is playing now" "הרוח משחקת עכשיו" was funded by crowd funding and published in 2022[3]
