It was founded in 2012 by professional rock climber Alex Honnold and supports community-led solar energy initiatives around the world. The foundation’s work focuses on environmental sustainability and social equity through energy access.
History The foundation was established by Alex Honnold in 2012, following his personal experiences witnessing energy poverty during climbing expeditions. Initially supported by his climbing income, the foundation began formal grantmaking in 2018 after registering as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Mission and Approach The Honnold Foundation supports solar energy projects that are community-centered and equity-driven. Impact Since 2019, the Honnold Foundation has launched 97 community partnerships serving more than 225,000 beneficiaries in more than 275 communities across more than 30 countries. These projects contribute to greater energy security, climate resilience, and economic opportunity in their respective communities.
