Jane C. Schroeder is a retired American epidemiologist and science editor. She is known for her contributions to research in environmental health and public health communications.

Early life and education

Jane C. Schroeder completed her undergraduate studies at the University of California, earning a B.A. in Biology with honors at the campus in Santa Cruz in 1979. She then earned her B.S. in Veterinary Science with the highest honors on the Davis Campus in 1983. She completed her doctorate in veterinary medicine at the University of California, School of Veterinary Medicine, in 1985. She then pursued a Master of Public Health in environmental and occupational health at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in 1994. Followed by a PhD in epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1999.[1][2]

Career

Veterinary Medicine (1985-1994)

In 1985, she began her career at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and worked as a small animal medicine and surgery intern for a year. She then worked at two veterinary hospitals in Philadelphia from 1986 until 1991 as an associate veterinarian. She finished her veterinary medicine career after working as a relief veterinarian in Georgia from 1992 until 1994.[1]

Research (1994-2021)

In 1994, Dr. Schroeder was working on her MPH when she started working as a research and graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina, School of Public Health. She worked on different studies as an assistant until 1999.[2] She then went on to become a research fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), working in the Epidemiology branch until 2001. She became an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina in the Department of Epidemiology until 2008.[3] She became a science editor for Environmental Health Perspectives in 2008 and worked there until her retirement in 2021.[4][5]

Contributions

Dr. Schroeder's research mainly focuses on risk factors like environment, genetics, and diet on conditions like HPV, uterine fibroids, and various forms of cancer like prostate cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer, to name a few.[6] She was a keynote speaker in the Principal Investigators Meeting of the Innovative Molecular Analysis Technology Program for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in 2005.[7][8] She was also a member of the Society for Epidemiologic Research.[9]

Dr.Schroeder has 56 publications and has been cited 2,477 times.[10]
