Jesús Salgado is a Spanish software architect and engineer specializing in astronomical data archives and distributed scientific infrastructure. He is known for his contributions to the design of major space science archives at the European Space Agency (ESA), his leadership within international standardization organizations like the IVOA and IPDA, and his current role as SKA Regional Centres Architect at the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO).
He has co-authored over 190 scientific and technical publications in astronomy, astrophysics, and data systems engineering, with more than 20,000 citations to his work.[1]
Career
[edit]European Space Agency (ESA)
[edit]Salgado worked for over two decades at the European Space Agency (ESA), making major contributions to its data systems:
- Gaia Archive: He helped design and deploy the Gaia Archive, enabling open access to high-precision astrometric data for over a billion stars. This work was foundational to Gaia's global scientific impact.[2]
- ESASky: Salgado was a core contributor to ESASky, a platform integrating data from ESA's missions into an intuitive visual interface.[3]
- VOSpec: He also contributed to the development of VOSpec, a widely used spectral data analysis tool within the Virtual Observatory framework.[4]
In a 2018 interview, he described the Gaia mission as “a revolution in how we understand the structure of the Milky Way” and emphasized his pride in “making complex data accessible to scientists and non-scientists alike.”[5]
He has also been featured in ESA’s internal ESDC Newsletter for his work on science archives and interoperability tools.[6]
International Standards and Collaboration
[edit]Salgado has played a leading role in setting international standards for astronomical and planetary data:
- International Virtual Observatory Alliance (IVOA): As a Working Group Chair, he co-authored several official standards including the VO-DML modeling language,[7] the Spectrum Data Model, and the Photometry Data Model.[8]
- International Planetary Data Alliance (IPDA): He was one of the co-creators of IPDA, helping define cross-agency data standards for planetary missions between NASA, ESA, and other international partners.[9]
Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO)
[edit]Since 2021, Salgado has served as SKA Regional Centres Architect at the Square Kilometre Array Observatory. He leads the design of the SRCNet, a globally distributed infrastructure to support the processing and delivery of data from SKA's next-generation radio telescopes.
His responsibilities include:
- Architecting the global data federation platform for the SKA Regional Centres.
- Authoring the official SRCNet Software Architecture Document.[10]
- Presenting SRCNet strategies and implementations at major scientific meetings, including the ADASS 2023 conference.[11]
