Krishnendu Gongopadhyay (born 1978) is an Indian mathematician and professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali (IISER Mohali). His research lies at the interface of geometry and group theory,  and he is recognized for his work on the interface between these areas, dealing with a broad range of issues on the theme.

Education and Early Career

[edit]

Gongopadhyay completed his Ph.D. in mathematics at IIT Bombay in 2009 under the supervision of Professor Ravi S. Kulkarni. Prior to his doctoral work, he earned his master's degree from Burdwan University and served as a research scholar at the Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), Allahabad. Following his Ph.D., he held postdoctoral positions at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, and the [[Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata.

Academic Career

[edit]

He joined IISER Mohali as an Assistant Professor in 2010, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2015, and became a full Professor in 2022. From 2021 to 2024, he served as Head of the Department of Mathematical Sciences. He is a member of IISER Mohali’s Senate and serves on multiple academic committees.

Research

[edit]

Gongopadhyay’s research spans a broad spectrum at the intersection of geometry and group theory. His work addresses a wide array of topics, including:

  • Classification of isometries in hyperbolic geometry
  • Conjugacy and z-classes in Lie groups
  • Reversibility or reality in groups
  • Surface group representations and geometric structures
  • Quaternionic Möbius transformations

He has authored more than 50 research papers published in reputable, peer-reviewed journals.

Disability

[edit]

Gongopadhyay lives with a permanent locomotor disability due to post-polio residual paralysis affecting both lower limbs. Despite significant physical challenges, he has built a distinguished academic career and has actively contributed to creating inclusive academic spaces.

Awards and Recognition

[edit]
  • Simon Visiting Professorship, Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, Germany (2023)
  • INSA Indo-Australia Fellowship (2016–17)
  • Junior Associate, ICTP Trieste (2014–2019)

Teaching and Mentorship

[edit]

Gongopadhyay has supervised 8 Ph.D. students and over 20 master's theses. He has mentored several postdoctoral researchers and regularly teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in geometry, topology, and group theory.

Outreach and Community Involvement

[edit]

Gongopadhyay has organized numerous national and international conferences, teacher training workshops, and outreach programs in mathematics. He has delivered lectures in many such programs on topics ranging from classical geometry to modern developments in group theory and geometry.
