LUMOS Orchestra (short for Lviv Unique and Magical Orchestra of Soundtracks, previously known as Cantabile Orchestra until 2017) is an independent youth orchestra from Lviv, Ukraine. They focus on performing music and soundtracks from movies, TV shows, video games, anime, and other pop culture media.
They’re known for creative arrangements and interactive concerts.
The orchestra does their own shows as well as joint projects with other groups and musicians. They also frequently perform at mass events and festivals. Additionally, they are known for creation of music videos on their covers of famous compositions.[1].
History
[edit]Initially, the band began as a small group of musicians playing music from anime, Japanese RPGs, J-rock, and Japanese composers [2]. They formed under the name Cantabile (which means “song-like” in Italian), inspired by the anime “Nodame Cantabile”[3]. At that time, the main goal of the group was “to show anime musicians that playing anime compositions live is quite possible”, and the motivation was “to give [fans] the opportunity to hear their favorite music performed live” [2]. The original line-up included seven people.
Their first performance was in 2008 at an anime fest “Seiza Ultimate” in Khmelnytskyi [2].
By 2010, with over ten members, they rebranded as Cantabile Orchestra and started focusing more on symphonic arrangements of soundtracks [4].
In 2017, the group took a hiatus and rebranded itself as LUMOS Orchestra (Lviv Unique and Magical Orchestra of Soundtracks), “because LUMOS is light, magic and music that is always with us” [5]. Their first performance under the new name was at "Lviv Music Day" in 2017 [6].
After the rebranding, the orchestra began to actively develop the interactive and artistic component of concerts. As a result, the repertoire included the Harry Potter story-concert, the Game of Thrones: A Symphony of Ice and Fire concert-trilogy, Epic Gaming Music, The Sounds of Christmas and other programs.
Concert programs
[edit]The Lord of the Rings concerts
[edit]LUMOS started performing music from The Lord of the Rings early in their career (the earliest mention is March 5, 2011) [7]. Their first full themed concert featuring Howard Shore’s (the composer of the trilogy) was in honour of the 120th anniversary of the birth of J. R. R. Tolkien and took place in Kyiv and Lviv [8], which, according to one of the participants’ blogs, was “the largest project since the founding of the band” [9]. It included the Dnipro Choir of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
In 2018, at the Comic Con Ukraine, They later played parts of their LOTR program at during a photoshoot with John Rhys-Davies, the actor of the Gimli. [10]. They teamed up with the Vilnius University choir Gaudeamus to bring the concert to audiences in both Ukraine and Lithuania.
In 2024, the orchestra premiered the program “The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit,” which included music from the Hobbit trilogy [11].
Harry Potter concert-story
[edit]Their first Harry Potter concert was in 2016 [12]. In 2018, the first “story concert” on the Harry Potter universe was held, where audience could compete for the House Cup by solving riddles and doing quizzes on Facebook, with the final competition happening live at the concert [13].
By 2022, they refreshed the program: the orchestra added new decorations (for example, large dormitory flags), sewn costumes for the musicians, arranged music from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and the Galician Chamber Choir “Yevshan” joined the concerts[14].
In 2024, LUMOS and Lighthouse CA hosted the “Harry Potter and the Winter Festival” at the October Palace, complete with an updated program of the concert and interactive experiences [15]. The Al More fantasy festival team joined the organization of the festival activities, and actors were added to the performance for overall storytelling, playing the roles of Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, and Minerva McGonagall. There was also a large-scale competition for the Hogwarts Cup, which Slytherin won [16][17].
Game of Thrones: Symphony of Ice and Fire concert-trilogy
[edit]In 2023, they premiered a themed concert based on Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon using music by Ramin Djawadi. The orchestra created their own arrangements to give the show a narrative arc, mixing in quotes from the books, custom costumes, sets, and animated visuals [18]. Yevshan Choir joined again. The concert program included interactive elements: the orchestra organized polls and competitions among the audience to determine which House would rule Westeros.
Heroes of Might and Magic III concert
[edit]They originally planned two concerts in 2022 with Heroes III composer Paul Anthony Romero, but due to the Russian aggression against Ukraine, the concerts were delayed by a year. In 2023, they did three shows with Romero (on piano) and Brock Summers (sax), mixing the soundtracks with Ukrainian folk instruments like the bandura and cimbalom [19].
Artist Yehor Klyuchnyk created original artwork and animations for the show. They repeated the performance in Lviv and Kyiv in 2024 [20].
