Madhusree Hatial is an Indian social and cultural activist, educator[1], writer, and national award-winning folk singer known for her work in preserving indigenous tribal art, music, and literature. She has also worked as a radio jockey (RJ) and drama artist with Akashvani Kolkata.[2] Hatial is particularly recognized for promoting traditional tribal forms such as Jhumur music and Sohrai painting across Eastern India. She has received several accolades for her contributions to cultural preservation and community empowerment, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2018.[3][4]

Early Life and Background

Hatial was born in Jhargram, West Bengal, India. During her formative years, she was exposed to tribal art and culture, partly through her father's interest in these traditions. This early environment played a role in shaping her later work in the preservation and promotion of indigenous tribal art forms.[5]

Hatial founded the trust MAROMIA AD SAMPRODAY[7] in Jhargram, West Bengal, aiming to preserve indigenous tribal folk art and promote economic independence among tribal women.[8] The trust operates in tribal regions of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha, focusing on:

  • Conservation of Indigenous Art Forms: Ensuring the survival and recognition of traditional tribal arts.
  • Empowerment of Tribal Women: Providing opportunities for self-sustainability and economic independence.[8]

Her initiatives include:

  • Mahua-based Products: Engaging women in producing Mahua flower pickles and hand sanitizers from Mahua spirit to promote ethical income sources.
  • Sal Leaf Products: Training programs for producing Sal leaf plates and bowls, creating new economic opportunities for tribal women.
  • Mobile Library & Storytelling: The "Bhramyaman Pathagar" mobile library and storytelling sessions foster a love for education among tribal children.[9]
  • Dedicated Tribal School: Establishing a school inspired by the Gurukul philosophy to empower tribal youth.

Jhumur Music and Dance

Hatial is noted for her contributions to Jhumur music, a tribal folk genre in Eastern India.[10]She has performed at various festivals, including the Chaitra Festival in Saraikela, accompanied by traditional instruments like the Mandar and Dhol drums.[11]

In 2018 The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has preserved 20 Vivah songs in the Jhumur language, sung by Madhusree Hatial, for research purposes.[12]

Tribal Art Preservation and Economic Initiatives

Hatial's efforts extend to preserving various tribal art forms:

  • Sohrai Painting: Hatial has conducted workshops and promoted Sohrai art internationally.[13][14]
  • Dokra Art: She supports artisans practicing this ancient metal casting technique.
  • Chhau Dance: She choreographed fusions of Jhumur songs with Chhau dance.[2]
