Matt Aponte is an American football coach who is currently serving as an offensive quality control coach for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL). He joined the Bears in 2025 after a successful collegiate coaching career, most recently as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of San Diego.

Coaching career

Early coaching and Iowa

Aponte began his coaching journey at the University of Iowa, where he served as an undergraduate assistant from 2014 to 2016. During this time, he worked in scouting, recruiting, and player personnel while also interning with the Kansas City Chiefs in the summers.^[1] He advanced to offensive assistant (2017–2018) and assistant quarterbacks coach (2019–2020) under head coach Kirk Ferentz. During his tenure, Iowa won 60 games, three consecutive bowl games, and a Big Ten West title.

San Diego (2021–2024)

Aponte joined the University of San Diego in 2021 as the tight ends coach. In 2023, he was promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, becoming the youngest offensive coordinator in NCAA Division I FCS.

Under Aponte’s leadership, the San Diego offense flourished. In 2023, true freshman quarterback Don Nankil became a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award. In 2024, quarterback Grant Sergent led the Pioneer Football League with 26 touchdowns (ninth in FCS) and just five interceptions. Wide receiver Ja’seem Reed earned 2024 PFL Offensive Player of the Year honors, finishing top 10 nationally in touchdowns, yards, and receptions. Running back Isaiah Williams also thrived, ranking ninth nationally with an average of 108 rushing yards per game and over 1,000 total rushing yards.

During his two years as coordinator, San Diego’s offense averaged 365 yards per game (2nd in PFL), and 14 of Aponte's players earned All-Conference honors.

Chicago Bears

In 2025, Aponte joined head coach Ben Johnson’s staff with the Chicago Bears as an offensive quality control coach. His hiring was first reported by CBS Sports. The role includes assisting with quarterback development, building on Aponte's collegiate expertise.^[2]

Personal life

Aponte was born in Staten Island, New York and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management from the University of Iowa (2018). He was named to the Coaching Network’s “30 Under 30” list in 2023.^[3]
