Draft:Nimitz Library

Nimitz Library is the main library for the Annapolis Area Naval Complex, located at the United States Naval Academy campus in Maryland, United States.[1] The academy's first library was organized in 1845.[2] The current library building was opened in 1973.[3] The building architects were John Carl Warnecke and Associates, who also designed Michelson Hall and Chauvenet Hall, in partnership with George M. Ewing Company.[3] As of 2017, the library had roughly 300,000 patron visits annually.[4] A major renovation of the ground floor of the building was completed in August 2021.[5] Circulation in the 2021–22 was slightly more than 11,000 physical books and other media.[5]
Anti-DEI book purge
[edit]Following an executive order signed by Donald Trump commanding removal of diversity, equity, and inclusion-related content from government-funded sources, the Nimitz Library removed 381 texts from their collection.[6][7] A bookseller who reviewed the list found that the books covered topics including "slavery in the United States, white supremacy (both historical and modern-day), racial discrimination within the Catholic church, generational communication differences in the workplace, gender norms throughout different cultures, homosexuality and transgender science and history, women in literature and feminist interpretations of classics, [and] the evolution of masculinity," and that a number of the volumes were textbooks "priced over $100. These aren't titles that students have the means to go out and purchase on their own."[8] PEN America reported that the book purge was the "first college-level library banning" since tracking began in 2021.[9]
