Reynier Llanes (born August 15, 1985, in Pinar del Río, Cuba) is a Cuban-American artist celebrated for his narrative-driven works blending magical realism with Cuban folklore and landscapes. His paintings often incorporate allegorical storytelling and symbolic imagery inspired by Santería traditions and rural Cuban life.

Early life and education

[edit]

Llanes studied at the Instructores de Arte school in Pinar del Río under realist painter Juan Miguel Suárez, graduating in 2004. He relocated to Havana in 2005, immersing himself in the city’s art scene and drawing inspiration from its museums.

Career

[edit]

After emigrating to the United States in 2007, Llanes settled in Naples, Florida, where he debuted with the exhibition Strange Visitor at Kapo Maestro Gallery. He later moved to Charleston, South Carolina, in 2009, earning an artist residency at Jonathan Green Studios. His 2011 "first purchase award" at Charleston’s Moja Art Festival marked his entry into public collections.

In 2012, Oxford America named him one of the "100 Under 100: New Superstars of Southern Art". By 2015, he relocated to Miami to engage with its international art market and Cuban diaspora community. Recent solo exhibitions include Timeless Origins (2023) at the Polk Museum of Art and Passages (2024) at the Gibbes Museum of Art.

Style and legacy

[edit]

Llanes employs oils, mixed media, and coffee-based pigments—a technique he terms "Espressionism"—to create dreamlike scenes of mystical figures and lush landscapes. His works reside in permanent collections at the Denver Art Museum, Ogunquit Museum of American Art, and Cornell Fine Arts Museum, among others.
