St. Xenia Metochion Monastery is a Serbian-American Orthodox monastery. It sustains itself by providing health care services to the greater community at large, in the city of Indianapolis. It is a women's monastic community located at 1901 N. Pennsylvania Street in Indianapolis, Indiana.[1][2]
History
[edit]Founded in 1990 under the omophorion of His Grace Bishop Longin (Krčo) of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of New Gračanica and Midwestern America,[3]it is one of two most important Serbian monasteries in the state, the other is the monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God in New Carlisle, Indiana. The monastery's Feast Day is 6 February (Julian calendar) when St. Xenia of Saint Petersburg is celebrated.
Mother superior Katherine Weston, a licensed mental health counsellor in the state of Indiana, heads the monastery.[4] The monastery survives on donations from both the faithful and clients who do not necessarily belong to the ecclesiastical religion.[citation needed]
The nearby St. Seraphim of Sarov Eastern Orthodox Bookstore, established in 1997, and managed by Mother Macaria Corbett is operated for the benefit of the St. Xenia Metochion Monastery[5][6]. It offers its service to students, priests, parishioners, youth leaders, church school teachers, and visitors. The bookstore has an excellent assortment of Orthodox and other Christian publications, CDs, audio and video tapes, DVDs, icons, golden crosses, vestments, cassocks, various liturgical, and other items from across the globe.
Community life at the monastery includes daily common and private prayer, work, and fellowship.[7] There are no overnight accommodations for visitors.
