Subhankar Ghosh.[1] was trained in direction at the Film and Television Institute of India. He came out to be the Associate Director of Damul (1984). He rose to partner with his father in the making of the classic, Trishagni (1989), to direct the National award-winning Woh Chhokri (1994). With teleserials like Yugantar, Nishkriti, and Dances of India showing on Doordarshan he was a name to reckon with on the National network in its heyday. Then he went on to teach filmmaking in Mumbai’s Whistling Woods and to set up the wing of Filmmaking Studies at the National University of distant Fiji.
Subhankar, son of legendary screenwriter-director Nabendu Ghosh, shot into the limelight with Yugantar, the DD serial based on Sunil Gangopadhyay's Shei Samay. He directed NFDC's Woh Chhokri from Bonophul's story, to win National Awards for Pallavi Joshi, Nina Gupta, and Paresh Rawal. An FTII graduate[2], Subhankar has taught directing at Mumbai's Whistling Woods.
Career:
[edit]2007– 09: Professor in Film Direction in Whistling Woods International, an academy for Film & Television training, established by the well-known film director, Shri Subhash Ghai. Produced & Directed “Yaad-e-Bismillah.[3]” a docu-drama film on the life & Guru-Shishya parampara of Bharat Ratna, Ustad Bismillah Khan.
2009: Produced & Directed two Short films ‘Mukul[4]’ & ‘Shaheed Shraddhanjali[5]’- Tribute films to Legendary film writer, Shri Nabendu Ghosh and to the Shaheeds of the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai, respectively.
2010 Was the founder SME (Subject Matter Expert) in Direction in ICE- a Balaji Telefilms Initiative, for designing the curriculum, teaching & establishing the Institute of Creative Excellence.
2012-14 The first ICCR Dadasaheb Phalke Chair for Film Production, Ministry of External Affairs, on deputation to Fiji National University, where he was the Head of Department, Film & Television & Head of School Creative Arts for all the 28 units of Fiji National University.
2017-18 The Academic Head of Ramesh Sippy Academy of Cinema & Entertainment, (RSACE), in association with Mumbai University at the Mumbai University Kalina Campus, Santa Cruz, Mumbai.

[edit]- Started his direction career in 1980 with TV serial “Rishte Naate” Starring the first TV serial of Navin Nischol.
- Directed TV serial “Yugantar” for DD National based on the Sahitya Akademi Award-winning novel ‘Sai Samay’ by Shri Sunil Gangopadhyay.
- Directed Film Woh Chokri, in 1993, produced by NFDC & Doordarshan, which got selected in the National Panorama of Indian Films, 1994 and won three National Awards:
1) Won the National Award for the Best Supporting Actor in ‘WOH CHHOKRI’- Paresh Rawal[6]
2) Won the National Award[7] for the Best Supporting Actress in ‘WOH CHHOKRI’ - Neena Gupta[8].
3) Won the Special Jury Award in the National Awards ‘WOH CHHOKRI’ – Pallavi Joshi[9]
- 1991 Co-Directed Hindi Feature Film “PRAHAR” along with Nana Patekar, which won the National Award for the Best Supporting Actor award, for Nana Patekar.
- 1988 Produced and Directed a Short film LOKPRIYA GOPINATH BARDOLOI for the Film Division of India.
- 1987 Produced and Directed two short films KANTHA and PATACHITRA for the Ministry of Textiles through National Film Development Corporation of India.
- 1986 Produced and Directed a Marathi TV Serial Rabindranath Tagore’s Nishkriti for Doordarshan Kendra, Mumbai formerly known as Doordarshan Bombay.
