Victoria McHalick (born 1965) is a New Zealand poet and fiction writer, recognized for her explorations of emotional complexity and the human condition. Her notable works include the short story collection The Honey Suckers (2001) and the novel The Taming (2003).
Early life and education
[edit]McHalick was born in England in 1965 and moved to New Zealand in 1967. She studied Law and English at Victoria University of Wellington, completing her degrees in 1988. In 1986, she attended Bill Manhire's renowned creative writing course, where she began writing poetry. After qualifying as an English solicitor, she worked in England, Scotland, and France from 1989 to 1993 before returning to New Zealand.
Career
[edit]McHalick’s literary debut came with her short story "The Picnic Virgin," featured as the title story in Emily Perkins' 1999 anthology of the same name. Her first collection, The Honey Suckers, was published in 2001 and received critical acclaim. The New Zealand Herald praised the collection as "polished perfection" and commended her insightful character portrayals.
In 2003, she released her debut novel, The Taming. Reviewer Penelope Bieder described it as "a clever, seductive novel about the end of innocence... an assured, fearless novel."
Personal life
[edit]McHalick resides in Wellington, New Zealand. She has balanced her writing career with raising a family. A classically trained musician, she has also worked as a composer and frequently draws on her varied life experiences in her writing.
