Yosef Peimer (Hebrew: ר׳ יוסף פיימר בן ר׳ מאיר Rabbi Yosef Peimer ben Rabbi Meir; also spelled Bohmer, Böhmer, Paymar, Paymer, Behmer), also known as Reb Yossele Slutzker (Yiddish: רב יוסל'ה סלוצקער) or The Slutzker Gaon (Yiddish: דער סלוצקער גאון der slutzker gaon; Skuodas, Lithuania, 1796 – Slutzk, Belarus, 1864) was a Lithuanian Jewish rabbi, Talmudist, halachist, and Torah authority.[1] He was a prominent student of Chaim of Volozhin and an early student at the Volozhin Yeshiva. He was also considered by Israel Salanter to be a formative teacher of his during Peimer's tenure serving the community of Luknik, Lithuania.[2]
Peimer served as one of four members of the beth din called to solve the famous dispute between the Netziv and Yosef Dov Soloveitchik.[3]
Biography
[edit]Yosef Peimer was born to Meir Peimer in the town of Skuodas, Lithuania [Yiddish: שקוד shkud] in 1796.[4] Beginning at a young age he attended the newly founded Volozhin Yeshiva, whose rosh yeshiva was Chaim of Volozhin, the preeminent student of the Vilna Gaon. He was a misnaged like his teachers.
