Llantilio Court

[edit]
Llandeilo?

Is this actually Llantilio Court? KJP1 (talk) 07:31, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

St Teilo's Church, Llandeilo has the same dedication but its tower looks nothing like this, and it stands in the middle of Llandeilo, not in fields next to a large country house, as here. KJP1 (talk) 15:29, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
You mean this (see right)? If there really are "remains" there, I'd be very grateful if you could point them out! Martinevans123 (talk) 15:37, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The very same. And there are remains there - which I have walked over - although nothing but some little bits of wall, foundations and the odd ruined structure like the ice house. Prior to demolition, it was a pretty big house. KJP1 (talk) 15:59, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
And the image clearly shows it’s a man-made, not a natural, environment. It’s a bunch of specimen trees around an ornamental lake. KJP1 (talk) 16:00, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I mean, ok.... so a lake and some trees. Are the remains in the foreground or the background? Why build a pretty big house in a late? Martinevans123 (talk) 17:26, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The house wasn’t actually in the lake - although Whitaker Wright did something along those lines at Witley Park - it looked out to it. It’s location was immediately adjacent to the church, as the 18th century illustration shows. The Coflein map gives you the idea, [1]. And the house is pretty similar, albeit with some 19th century aggrandisement. KJP1 (talk) 17:56, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. So are the remains in the distance? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 19:40, 29 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure. It’s a long time since I wandered around there, and I can’t recall from which end of the lake that shot was taken. It’s a very lovely spot, Hen Gwrt Moated Site is one of my favourites. KJP1 (talk) 09:30, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. We'll have to take Trevor Rickard's word for it. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:23, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The 1793 drawing/ engraving by Rev. J. Gardner is very intriguing. I can find no record of any Llandeilo church, situated like that, with a spire. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:29, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It wouldn’t be the first time engravers got the titles wrong - there’s a well-known Gastineau of Monnow Bridge that, due to a printing error, is labelled “Gate and Bridge, Ragland”. You’d search a long time to find that in Raglan. KJP1 (talk) 10:56, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Or even in Ragland. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:13, 30 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
