Template:Cite constellation/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Usage

[edit]

This template produces a standardised citation and a link to a VizeR query output for an object giving the constellation it is within.

Using this template provides uniform and accurate citations across large numbers of articles, and links directly to the relevant entry in the catalogue.

{{Cite constellation}} can be used without parameters, in which case it generates just the standard citation. The single parameter is used to create a link to an individual entry in the VizieR database; this is optional but encouraged. The parameter should be the designation (not coordinates) of an astronomical object recognised by the Sesame Name Resolver. VizieR will automatically look up the J2000 coordinates, precess them to B1875 equinox (celestial coordinates), and then query the table.

For example, to link to the database entry for WR 31a:

  • {{Cite constellation|WR 31a}}

returns

  • Roman, Nancy G. (1987). "Identification of a constellation from a position". Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. 99 (617): 695. Bibcode:1987PASP...99..695R. doi:10.1086/132034.

There are two optional fields:

  • mode, either "cs1" or "cs2"
  • postscript, defines the terminal punctuation for the citation, usually used with mode=cs2
