User:AJ DONUTS/sandbox/OVOXO comparison

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I don't know who is the goat in Canada, Drake or The Weeknd? Say it: Drake or The Weeknd? Both artists have good albums, started their career with tapes, and even got their own labels, as well as biggest hits (so Weeknd got this big hits album from 2021). So, let's see the comparison!

Crews

[edit]

Drake

[edit]

He is a member of his OVO crew since 2012, along with producers 40, Boi-1da, DJ Prince, Mike Zombie, OG Ron C, T-Minus and Nineteen85, artists TV Gucci, Preme, Reps Up Gilla, Majid Jordan, PartyNextDoor, Roy Woods, Dvsn (pronounced "Division"), Baka Not Nice (also bodyguard), Popcaan, Naomi Sharon, Smiley, ILoveMakonnen, and Plaza, the two latter are not active, engineer Noel Cadastre, Ezee, Coco, and a lot of homeboys.

Weeknd

[edit]

He is the leader of the XO crew, which is also a label, consisting of artists Chxrry22 (pronounced "Cherry twenty-two"), Belly, Nav, 88Glam and Black Atlass, the two latter are not active, producers Illangelo, DaHeala and DannyBoyStyles, managers Tony Sal (the singer took the nickname on "Starboy") and Cash, creative director Lamar Taylor, Hawk Marley, photographer Hyghly Alleyne, engineer Shin Kamiyama, and the then-sentenced Stix. The crew is active since 2011.

Mixtape trilogy?

[edit]

Drake

[edit]

He has a "pre-Young Money" mixtape trilogy released from 2006 to 2009. These includes: Room for Improvement (2006), Comeback Season (2007) and So Far Gone (2009), but have no re-package as Weeknd did for below. Boi-1da and 40 are the main producers of the trilogy. Also, So Far Gone included a Young Money EP which shares the same name.

Weeknd

[edit]

Yes. He has released throughout 2011 and re-packaged the mixtapes in a whole compilation, Trilogy, in 2012. These includes: House of Balloons, Thursday and Echoes of Silence. All of the mixtapes' production was primarily handled by Doc McKinney and Illangelo. It contains guest features from Drake and Juicy J. On the latter, there's a cover version of his idol Michael Jackson's "Dirty Diana", but with a more alt-R&B aesthetic with the swimming beats of Illangelo.

I love the Japanese aesthetic and the red panda on the cover art, except the "sex tapy" and "kissy" background. It was designed by Lamar Taylor. Drake is the only guest feature, while DannyBoyStyles, DaHeala and Weeknd himself provided production. On "Belong to the World", Geoff Barrow of Portishead accused the singer for stealing the drums from their song "Machine Gun". This was made another time by American Kanye West and Ty Dolla Sign-led duo ¥$ on their song "Field Trip".

Take Care is Drake's most popular album, released in late 2011 and containing guest features from The Weeknd, Rihanna, André 3000, Nicki Minaj, Stevie Wonder on harmonica, Rick Ross, Birdman, and Kendrick Lamar. It contains production from 40, Boi-1da, Illangelo, T-Minus, Doc McKinney, Just Blaze and Jamie xx, among others. It was considered as one of the greatest albums of all time, and won in 2013 the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The biggest track, its title track featuring Rihanna, was influenced by dance music with the sampling of a Jamie xx remix of Gil Scott-Heron's 2010 rendition of "I'll Take Care of You" by Brook Benton. Its Woodkid-directed video features shots of several wildlife animals.

Released in late 2016 and winner of the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album in 2018, Starboy is widely known as the singer's magnum opus. Featuring Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar, Future and Lana Del Rey, as well as Ariana Grande, Young Thug and ASAP Rocky on its remixes, it contains production from Doc McKinney, Cirkut, Ben Billions, Mano, Max Martin, Ali Payami, Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, Jake One, Swish, Labrinth, Bobby Raps, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Metro Boomin, Frank Dukes and Diplo. Fun fact: the album was snubbed by the Recording Academy for its Grammy consideration for Album of the Year.

Dawn FM (2022) is probably my favorite. Released in January 7, 2022, and containing guest features from Tyler, the Creator and Lil Wayne, it explores a fictional radio show named "DAWN FM" and contains monologues from Jim Carrey, Quincy Jones and Josh Safdie. There's also a Prime Video documentary series which is about making the album.
