Michael Chow is an American photojournalist and videographer. He serves as a senior visual journalist and FAA-certified drone pilot at The Arizona Republic and USA Today Network.[1][2] His career spans major global events, including coverage of the NBA Finals, Super Bowls, Olympic Games, FIFA World Cups, and significant historical events such as the 1992 Los Angeles riots.[3] Chow is also an instructor in visual storytelling at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.[1]

Career

Chow graduated from San Jose State University in 1988. He began his career at The Tacoma News Tribune and joined The Phoenix Gazette in 1989, continuing with The Arizona Republic after their merger in 1997.[1]

In 2017–2018, Chow contributed significantly to The Wall: Unknown Stories, Unintended Consequences, a multimedia investigative project by the USA Today Network examining the U.S.–Mexico border wall. The project received the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting.[4][5]

Notable Works

Chow co-directed the Emmy-winning documentary An Unnatural Wonder, an exploration of environmental changes in the Colorado River caused by Glen Canyon Dam. The film won a 2019 Rocky Mountain Emmy Award.[6]

He was also part of the investigative team behind Pipeline of Children, a series on unaccompanied minor migrants from Central America. This project earned the 2015 Hillman Prize for Newspaper Journalism.[2]
