Destoroyah (Japanese: デストロイア, Hepburn: Desutoroia) is a crustacean kaiju who first appeared in the 1995 film Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, the last installment of the Heisei era for the Godzilla franchise.
He was born from a colony of Precambrian crustaceans mutated by the Oxygen Destroyer, a weapon used to kill the first Godzilla in the year 1954. He later evolved and became a perfect life form, whilst encountering the dying Godzilla and his son Godzilla Junior, both of whom he attacked and attempted to kill.
Overview
[edit]Design
[edit]In Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), Destoroyah takes on many forms throughout of the film, each being distinct, though sporting the same core crustacean-like elements such as dark red armor plating or skin, multiple appendages, and spiky protrusions.
Destoroyah's first form, the "Micro Form", resembles a tiny trilobite-like, with a flattened shell and multiple spiked protrusions emerging from its shell, this form was 1 centimetre (10 millimetres; 0.033 feet; 0.010 metres) long and only grew quickly until becoming the size of an insect.
Destoroyah's second form, the "Juvenile Form", was a result of the micro forms evolving into Juvenile forms, this form was 2 metres (2,000 millimetres; 6.6 feet; 200 centimetres) tall and would grow to 18 metres (18,000 millimetres; 59 feet; 1,800 centimetres) tall in the same form. This form took on a giant spider-like crab with a frill on its head, and a secondary mouth inside its mouth, its mouth took on an insect-like design with multiple sets of mandibles, this form also sported a horn-crested head similar to that of the 5th and final form.
Destoroyah's second form, the "Aggregate Form", was a result of the surviving juvenile forms coming out together to form an Aggregate form, this form of Destoroyah is similar to the Juvenile forms but had two crab claws and two massive spear-like claws on its back, this form was 60 metres (60,000 millimetres; 200 feet; 6,000 centimetres) tall, 40 metres (40,000 millimetres; 130 feet; 4,000 centimetres) long and weighed in at 15,000 tonnes (33,000,000 pounds)
Destoroyah's fourth form, the "Flying Form", evolved from the aggregate form to sprouting wings capable of flight, and flying without the requirement of flapping the wings. In this flying form, Destoroyah has two wing-like lobes on its sides a forked tail and a nasal horn. It gains flight capabilities and retains its micro-oxygen beam. The Flying form of Destoroyah is 65 metres (65,000 millimetres; 213 feet; 6,500 centimetres) long with a wingspan of 80 metres (80,000 millimetres; 260 feet; 8,000 centimetres), and retained the same weight as the Aggregate form.
Destoroyah's fifth form, the "Perfect Form", was a result of Destoroyah re-emerging from a nuclear powerplant and evolving after being sent flying into a powerplant by Godzilla Junior's atomic breath. This form sports bat-like wings, large curved horns on the sides of its head, a humanoid body structure and a long tail with a pincer at the end. The face of the Perfect form is more dinosaurian with a white mouth filled with sharp teeth and resembled a depiction of a demon.
Character's biography
[edit]Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995)
[edit]After the Oxygen Destroyer was detonated in 1954 and had destroyed the first Godzilla,[b] the weapon mutated several Precambrian crustaceans lying beneath Tokyo Bay. 42 years later in 1996, an underwater drill accidentally released these creatures and they ran rampant through Tokyo. They eventually reached their two-meter forms and proceeded to destroy a bridge then hide away in a factory. The Japanese Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) sent in soldiers, who proved helpless against the monsters, until they made use of flamethrowers, which forced them on the retreat and let the JSDF realize that these mutants were weak against extreme temperatures. They deployed a unit of maser tanks and missile batteries armed with Ultra Low Temperature lasers and cooling shells. The aggregates reappeared, but this time formed into two giant forms, which they proved helpless against.
Now with two major threats, the JSDF decided to draw Godzilla to the two monsters in the hope that he would succeed in getting rid of them. They planned to lure in Godzilla Junior in the hope that the King of the Monsters would follow his son. The JSDF used a pair of psychics, one of which was Miki Saegusa who protested against this, to make Junior come to Tokyo.
Upon his arrival, Destoroyah attacked him and easily managed to dominate the battle. However Junior managed to get in a lucky shot that brought down the flying Destoroyah. But Destoroyah changed back into an aggregate form and managed to pin the son of Godzilla down and land a bite into Junior's skin, injecting him with micro-oxygen, though Junior blasted the aggregate into a nearby building.[1] Later Godzilla arrived on the scene only to be confronted by Destoroyah's perfect form, which greatly resembled a demon. Destoroyah took flight and struck down the King of the Monsters, taking Junior into its clutches. Destoroyah then dropped Junior into a building, killing the King of the Monsters' son. Godzilla got to his feet, enraged at the death of his child.
The micro-oxygen kaiju landed and challenged him to battle. Destoroyah blasted the King of the Monsters with its micro oxygen rays and used its mass to smash him into the ground. It then wrapped its tail around Godzilla's neck and dragged him out to sea, dropping him into the water. However, Godzilla attacked Destoroyah with his red spiral ray, blasting it apart, but it countered by disassembling into several aggregate forms and attacking Godzilla. However, a nuclear pulse from the King of the Monsters blasted away the aggregate creatures. Upon an attempt to revitalize his son, Godzilla's grief sent the meltdown his body was undergoing to enter critical levels.
However, Destoroyah wasn't done yet and attacked Godzilla as his heart began to overheat. It began to strangle the monster king with its tail again and threw him away from his dead son. However, Godzilla unleashed his atomic blast, greatly increased in power due to his temperature rising, which blasted Destoroyah apart. As the King of the Monsters began to near 1,200 °C (2,190 °F), Destoroyah attempted to escape by flying away, but the JSDF blasted its wings and froze the micro-oxygen in its body, making it fall to the ground and explode into a cloud of mist upon impact.[2]
Godzilla Island (1998)
[edit]In Godzilla Island, Destoroyah in the series is under the control of Zaguresu, and is deployed to defend or assist the other monsters utilized by the alien.
In Episode 29, Heaven and Earth, Zagreth unleashes Destoroyah as a response when Godzilla Junior's cage is broken open by M.O.G.U.E.R.A's eye laser. In Episode 30, Raise the Flag of Victory!, Destoroyah confronts Godzilla, Junior, M.O.G.U.E.R.A, Mothra, and Rodan, but is defeated by Godzilla when Destoroyah is thrown by Godzilla towards an Auto-Blaster, causing the Auto-Blaster to explode, killing Destoroyah.
