Mohamed Shiraz Zawahir (Born 17 April 1995) is a Sri Lankan football coach and a graduate of St. Anthony’s College, Kandy and Solent University. He is known for his contributions to football coaching in the United Kingdom and for being a prominent advocate for diversity and inclusion in the sport. Zawahir has worked with both Southampton Football Club and Chelsea Football Club, two major teams in the English football system[1]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Shiraz grew up in Sri Lanka with a strong passion for sports, particularly football. He attended one Sri Lankans most prestigious schools in St Anthony's College, Kandy. Where he played Rugby and Football for is schools team. Upon completing his studies, he later moved to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education in the sporting field. He completed a BSc (Hons) in Football Studies followed by a Master’s degree in Sport Management at Southampton Solent University[2]
Career
[edit]During his time as a student, Shiraz began working part-time with Southampton FC’s coaching programs, which focus on empowering youth and adults through football to enhance physical and mental well-being. His work at Southampton marked the beginning of his coaching career in England.
Following the completion of his academic and early coaching journey with Southampton FC, Zawahir joined Chelsea FC, where he worked for two years as part of their coaching setup. After his tenure at Chelsea, he returned to Southampton FC to continue his coaching career, contributing to player development and community outreach[3]
Recognition and Awards
[edit]Shiraz was nominated for the Premier League’s 'No Room for Racism Icon Award', an honor that recognizes individuals who promote diversity and fight discrimination in football. He was one of only twenty individuals nationally to receive this nomination, making him the first Sri Lankan to be recognized with this distinction. The award is part of the Premier League’s ongoing initiative to increase inclusion and equality in the sport.[4]
In addition to his achievements, Shiraz holds a UEFA 'B' Coaching License, further cementing his status as a qualified and experienced football coach. While being the first Sri-Lankan to hold such a prestigious coaching license.[5]
Legacy and Future
[edit]Shiraz’s work has made him a respected figure in the international football coaching community. His journey from Sri Lanka to coaching at major English clubs serves as an inspiration to aspiring coaches from the region. Many hope to see him contribute to the Sri Lankan National Youth Team setup in the future.[6]
