Deletion process cheat sheet

Disclaimer: this is still in test, and should be used with caution until verified.

This is a step-by-step summary of how to nominate a single page, ArticleName,^[a]^[b] for deletion, using the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion procedure. For additional details, see WP:AFDHOWTO.

Place the deletion tag on the article:
- First, sign in; you won't be able to complete the process if you don't. IP users are unable to use this process.
- Insert {{subst:afd1}} at the top of the article you wish to nominate for deletion. (no parameters)
- Include in the edit summary: AfD: Nominated for deletion; see [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/NominationName]].^[c]
- Do not mark the edit as minor. Save page. View the page again, and look for "Preloaded debate" link.
Create deletion discussion page: (see WP:AFDHOW)
- click "Preloaded debate" in the AfD page to create Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/ArticleName
- Add {{subst:afd2 |pg=ArticleName |cat=Category |text=Deletion reason}} ~~~~
  - Pick Category letter from Template:AfD categories
  - Write your Deletion reason text, referring to entries in WP:DEL-REASON (or WP:SPEEDY)
- Use edit summary Creating deletion discussion for [[ArticleName]] and save.

Add article to deletion log:

find the current deletion log,^[d] and open it for editing.

right now, the current log is: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2025 April 28^[e]

add {{subst:afd3}} to the top of the list at the current deletion log

Edit the current deletion log: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2025 April 28
Look for a series of templates, with the 'Add new entries' hidden comment, and place your entry there:


{{subst:afd3 |pg=NominationName}} 
{{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Underground basket-weaving}}
{{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/History of Outer Slobovia}}
{{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bar coaster flipping}}

use edit summary: Listing [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/NominationName]], and save the page.

Notify users and WikiProjects:
- notify creator^[f] and main editors^[g] by adding {{subst:Adw|ArticleName|NominationName}} to their user Talk page
- notify WikiProjects^[h] via Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Compact using same Adw template as above.
Update deletion log:
- go back to the same deletion log^[i] you added the article to earlier
- add one {{subst:delsort|Topic|~~~~}} template to the nomination for each WikiProject you notified.
  - Pick Topic from Deletion Sorting list.
This lets log viewers know what projects were notified, and prevents duplicate effort.

Notes

^ ArticleName: anyplace you see italics in the instructions, you need to substitute the appropriate text. For example, if you want to delete the article "Underground basket-weaving", then wherever you see ArticleName you should instead substitute "Underground basket-weaving".
^ Nomination name: The first time a page is nominated for deletion, the NominationName is the same as ArticleName. After that, it takes on a parenthetical suffix to disambiguate it from previous nominations. The second time an article is nominated, it may be called, for example, "Underground basket-weaving (2nd nomination)".
^ Substitute the article name you're nominating for deletion. If this article was nominated for deletion before, then use, "ArticleName (2nd nomination)" instead, "ArticleName (3rd nomination)" and so on; here, and everywhere else where NominationName appears in the instructions.
^ Deletion logs have the filename format [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/yyyy Month dd]]. The day is not zero-padded; so the log filename on New Year's Day ends "January 1" (not, "January 01").
^ You may wish to refresh the page, to ensure you are pointing to the correct log.
^ The page creator can be found by examining the page History, and clicking the 'oldest' link at the top of the page.
^ The main editors of the page can be found by going to the History tab, and clicking Page Statistics at the top of the page; then 'Top editors'.
^ Which WikiProjects should you notify? The ones listed (usually) at the top of the Talk page of the article.
^ The deletion log has today's date on it, and rolls over to the next day at midnight UTC; be sure to use the same log as you did before.
