Mirugwe Alex

Mirugwe Alex is a Ugandan data scientist, researcher, and academic known for his work in machine learning applications in public health, particularly in HIV care, cervical cancer screening, and outbreak response systems. He is affiliated with Makerere University School of Public Health and has contributed to curriculum development and instruction in computer science at Victoria University, Kampala.

Early Life and Education

Mirugwe completed his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering at Makerere University in Uganda in 2019, with a final CGPA of 4.18/5.0. He earned a Master of Science in Data Science from the University of Cape Town in 2021, where his thesis focused on using machine learning for automated bird detection from webcam images. His advisors were Dr. Juwa Nyirenda and Dr. Emmanuel Dufourq.

  • Built a deep learning algorithm for cervical cancer screening in Uganda.
