History

[edit]

Before the 1950's, saltwater fish was primarily sold at the town Aberdeen and since the 1900's has been regarded as an important to Hong Kong. During the 1990's and 2000's, its population decreased due to rapid developments of fisheries in the province Guangdong and increased operation costs in the Hong Kong fishing industry. [The article states that the total population of boat dwellers in Hong Kong was estimated at 2000 in 1841, 150000 in 1963, and 40000 in 1982; however, none of these are relevant to Aberdeen Floating Village and it refers to "boat dwellers" as opposed to people.] Presently[when?], the majority of boat owners use them for fishing and do not live in them. Most of the descendents of the ["]floating people["] have relocated to land-based means.
