Allegations of mortgage fraud
[edit]In April 2025, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) referred Letitia James for possible criminal prosecution to the US Department of Justice, alleging that she had committed mortgage fraud.[1]
FHFA described an August 2023 misrepresentation by James that she would use a property in Norfolk, Virginia as her principal residence, even though she was the Attorney General of New York State at the time, a post that required her to reside in New York. FHFA also alleged that she had misrepresented an investment property in Brooklyn, New York as having four units instead of five.[2] In both cases, FHFA alleged that the "falsified bank documents and property records [were used] to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan term."[1]
The FHFA also claimed that James purchased another property with her father as co-signer but listed them as husband and wife in 1983 and 2000.[3]
