Verdical Group, Inc. is an American sustainability consulting company founded in 2012[1]. The company provides sustainability consulting services for buildings, products, organizations, and events[2][3][4][5].

Verdical Group was founded by Drew Shula in his Pasadena, California garage as a direct response to the climate crisis[6], as 40% of global carbon emissions come from buildings[7]. In a 2022 interview with Metropolis Magazine, Shula described founding the company as an act of "architectural disobedience," or, "architectural design and building construction with an ultra-focus on sustainability and carbon reduction. It’s using buildings to help solve the climate crisis, but what’s needed is a radical break from the status quo of conventional repetitive building practices."[8][9]

The company is private and structured as a benefit corporation in the State of California[10], with offices in Los Angeles, Pasadena, San Diego, and San Francisco[11]. Shula is 100% owner of the company[12]. Verdical Group has worked with high profile institutions such as NASA, Google, Johnson & Johnson, Meta, and Apple[13]. Verdical Group has been featured in media including The Washington Post[14], Architect Magazine[15], Metropolis Magazine, Architectural Record, and USA Today.

Business as a force for good

[edit]

Verdical Group founder Drew Shula's goal in starting the company, was to use business as a force for good[16]. The firm's services include net zero consulting[17][18][19], and U.S. Green Building Council LEED certification consulting, to reduce energy and water use in buildings[20][21].

Verdical Group is a certified B Corporation, by third party B Lab, a certification program to measure a for-profit company's environmental and social performance[22]. The company is a member of the corporate giving program 1% for the Planet, donating at least 1% of total annual revenue (not just profit) to environmental nonprofits and has donated $183,198 as of 2023[23].

Verdical Group achieved net positive operations for it's entire existence by offsetting it's annual carbon footprint, plus an additional 10%, back to the company's founding in 2012. This includes all company operations encompassing impact areas such as company office space, employee travel, waste, and procurement.[24]

Verdical Group is a signatory of Amazon's Climate Pledge[25], and has a policy to not accept money from fossil fuel companies. Verdical Group banks with "fossil free" banks including Beneficial State Bank, and the company's investment accounts are fully divested from fossil fuels, tobacco, prisons, and firearms[26].

Additionally, Verdical Group uses their marketing platforms to advocate for social and environmental causes including: antiracism, equity, human rights, democracy and voting, the climate crisis, environmentalism, renewable energy, and decarbonization[27][28].

Net Zero Conference

[edit]

Verdical Group's founder, Drew Shula, also founded the Net Zero Conference and associated Trailblazer Awards, through Verdical Group, in 2014. Verdical Group produces the annual conference, which is one of the largest in the world dedicated to net zero design[29][30]. The conference has grown to 1,500 attendees from 54 countries and 45 U.S. states[31].
