The result of the discussion was keep. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 18:49, 19 April 2025 (UTC)
- Template:ASIN (talk · history · transclusions · logs · subpages)
This has been discussed several times. There seems to be substantial agreement that institutionalising links to the sales pages of any company is a bad idea (and given the role Amazon has played in decimating independent retail, I would argue that it's an especially bad idea in the case of Amazon), but, equally, there hasn't been any appetite to fix it. In 2012 consensus was to keep for now but that it should be replaced wherever possible. That never got done, per the everybody / somebody / anybody / nobody problem. Arguments for keep thus far have included:
- It's useful - not an argument we normally accept (see WP:USEFUL).
- It's an "identifier of last resort" - but now we have Wikidata, and 5,000 transclusions of this template indicates that it's an identifier of first resort for some people and there is no Wikipedia policy mandating that we have some kind of an identifier for everything, anyway. A stylistic preference that leads to industrialised promotion of a single corporate entity would be rejected out of hand in any other area.
- It contains more than just bare description - OK, but it's not independent, as the data is provided by the originator, and I am aware of many Amazon sales pages where the description is utterly bogus (e.g. books promoting quackery and conspiracy theories), so it is also an obvious WP:RS fail.
- Some information has no other source - sure, and what do we normally do when some fact is not available from a reliable source? We don't include it, per WP:RS.
In short, I think it is long past time that we stopped endorsing and facilitating links that privilege the largest retailer in the Western world, for information which is not independent and cannot be treated as reliable. In my view, use of this template is antithetical to the project's ethos. We promote free culture: both intellectual and fiscal freedom. Amazon is pretty much the poster child for the exact opposite. Guy (help! - typo?) 19:09, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- Keep again, for the billionth time. Nothing changed since the last discussion. ASIN is an identifier of last resort. When you have a better identifer than ASIN, use that one. If not, ASIN is perfectly acceptable. There is zero reason to delete this template. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 21:31, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- I will note that in the last discussion, the closer remarked "Normally after three TFDs there would be a moratorium on future renominations, but if the outcome of any future RFC/discussion determines that Amazon should not be used then a renomination is perfectly acceptable." This is now the fourth TFD, again from JzG, after another discussion Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)/Archive_201#ASIN_links also by JzG, that concluded that ASIN was, again, useful as an identifier of last resort. This is getting very close to WP:DEADHORSE. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 21:36, 8 April 2025 (UTC)
- There is no requirement for an identifier. That is like saying it is the infobox of last resort: we don't need an infobox either. It's a source of promotional (i.e. unreliable) material, and it's a commercial source. Everything about this template, and its many thousands of transclusions, gives the lie to the "identifier" argument. Guy (help! - typo?) 20:22, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- Keep as clearly useful with no reasonable substitute in at least some cases. I went to "What links here" and clicked on a random article. I ended up at BMW#cite_note-Odin-8, where ASIN B00ZLN91ZG is used to link to a source. That source is a Kindle book with no ISBN listed. The source does not appear to be listed in Worldcat. This appears to be an example of ASIN being used as an identifier of last resort, as intended. What does the nominator recommend that we use instead to help readers find this source? – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:42, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- Also, I want to point out that, per previous discussion, this template is part of a family of templates for citation identifiers, like {{hdl}} and {{bibcode}}. Not having it is detrimental to citation style flexibility. Because this identifier would still be supported by {{cite xxx}} templates, even if we delete this template, preventing WP:CITEVAR compliance on articles that don't use {{cite xxx}} templates. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 17:41, 9 April 2025 (UTC)
- One of these things is not like the others, Headbomb, and you know it. Templates like bibcode and {{doi}} are vendor neutral. They are neutral identifiers for sources. Asin is not a neutral identifier. It is a link to a sales page. We don't have links to the SKUs of any other company, as far as I can tell. It's not "part of a family", it is a cuckoo in the nest.
- I identified WP:USEFUL above. We have no policy demanding WP:IDENTIFIER. It is significant that the example you give exists only as a Kindle e-book. The publisher, Belvedere Publishing, has only one author: this one. It has no website, only a Wordpress site. It is, in all probability, self-published. If someone wanted to link it without the fake authority of an ASIN identifier, we would reject it as spam. Guy (help! - typo?) 20:25, 16 April 2025 (UTC)
- Keep I think there is a consistent effort to use other identifiers, which we all hereby encourage, and hence the reasoning has not changed. All the best: Rich Farmbrough 14:16, 10 April 2025 (UTC).
- 5,000 plus transclusions last time I looked. Bluntly, this is never going to stop as long as the template exists. Guy (help! - typo?) 20:25, 16 April 2025 (UTC)

- Keep, also support the indentifier of last resort argument, and note the harmful cascading consequences of its removal. Klbrain (talk) 12:22, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- Keep Wikidata is meaningless, it is a user edited contribution base. It is the same as saying use Wikipedia as a reference. Thus Wikidata is not an identifier that can be used independently. And if Wikidata uses the ASIN as its only identifier, what's the point of shifting that to Wikidata? -- 65.92.246.77 (talk) 06:34, 15 April 2025 (UTC)
- Keep – Other identifiers are preferable, but if no others can be found, ASIN provides proof-of-existence and often further details about the work. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 02:10, 17 April 2025 (UTC)
- Delete Eh, I don't think that the convenience of having a direct link to a vendor page outweighs the promotion concerns. Unlike DOIs and HDLs this one has inherent commercial importance and is much less useful than these two. Wikidata not being an "independent" identifiers isn't important at all, nor do I see why Wikidata sometimes using ASIN mean that we need more ASINs on Wikipedia by giving them a template that seems to encourage their use.
