[edit]If someone, currently on the list, misses a day, do they drop off the list entirely since the streak was broken? -- GreenC 14:11, 30 July 2023 (UTC)
- @GreenC: yes. And streaks can be retroactively broken too, if pages are deleted. Legoktm (talk) 08:19, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
Why am I not on here?
[edit]I have edited every day since November 22, 2023. Looking at the bottom statistics, I should be on the list. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 14:57, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've chatted with some folks on Discord about it and apparently even though I've always maintained a streak in my time zone, the bot doesn't count that. I wish there was a way to be able to give permission for a bot to know what time zone I'm in, then. I believe my streak is valid! Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 15:38, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- You should have 1 edit in every day according to UTC. Concerning the local time, I am sure I edited in almost all possible time zones, I do not think this would be possible to take into account. Ymblanter (talk) 18:46, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- Well, I think it would just be a matter of seeing if you edit at least once in a 24 hour period. I've always edited for my streak in the timezone at home, even when I've been away briefly. I'd like to think it's possible to recognize my streak outside of my heart. Anyways, courtesy ping to legoktm, who I was told apparently works on this. Maybe there's a way to make it happen. If there isn't, at least I'll know. Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 19:09, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hi @Clovermoss, thanks for the ping.
- The UTC constraint works both ways, for example, for Johnny Au, it helped him keep up his streak despite the SOPA/PIPA blackout, which started at the US's Eastern Time.
- As far as this listing goes, I don't know how to apply timezone adjustments / just look at 24-hour periods to the database query in a way that's reasonable (I'm interested if people have suggestions!). It would probably be easier to expand the companion tool to (optionally) take timezones into account since it only looks for a single users' edits.
- I don't want to devalue your contributions and streak, I think it's totally valid and a real streak! Just outside of the confines of what I very arbitrarily defined as wiki streaks. When I initially worked on this, I had said that there are lots of other types of streaks and ways to define them, and that I hope it would inspire people to come up with their own streaks and analysis; I think what you're asking for totally fits into this, but it hasn't exactly happened yet but I'm still optimistic people will work on it. Legoktm (talk) 20:53, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Legoktm: Obviously I don't want to break other people's streaks! I was hoping there was a way to maybe account for both at the same time. Like if someone is editing at least once in a 24 period regardless of time zone, wouldn't it allow for everyone editing with the current standards to keep their steaks? Or am I missing something? Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 20:55, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- As far as this list goes, I primarily don't know how to implement it. I also think that the UTC constraint is a weird quirk that is kind of cool, but also I would be fine getting rid of it if we figured out how to.
- I think we could start by implementing it in the streaks.toolforge.org tool, which I have an idea of how to do technically, and I'll probably get around to eventually, but don't want to make a promise I can't keep. Legoktm (talk) 21:15, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Legoktm: Fair enough. I'd love a ping if you make any sort of incremental progress :) Clovermoss🍀 (talk) 22:55, 22 December 2024 (UTC)
