A new newsletter directory is out!
A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

- Please? We really need editors editing public art to be in the conversation. —SmokeyJoe (talk) 21:31, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- This one's tough. I'm waiting to see where we land, because many articles are likely going to need to be moved. I'm guilty of using several conventions because there was so much inconsistency, as well as differences based on region. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:53, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
- I know. I pushed myself to say something. I think the conversation is important because new sculpture and other public art articles are coming, and they may be titled haphazardly. A statement addressing the issues would be very useful. One question I have, does the art literature name these things differently to the public media? —SmokeyJoe (talk) 22:17, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Public art in Boston
Hello, fellow public art lovers. Ahead of the upcoming WikiConference North America, which will be held in Boston in November, I'm creating a project page listing public artworks in the city at Wikipedia:WikiProject Sculpture/Boston.
Surprisingly, there were only 6 Wikipedia articles about public art in Boston, before this month. So far I've created Boston Massacre Monument, Equestrian statue of Joseph Hooker, Statue of Charles Sumner (Boston), Statue of Charles Sumner (Cambridge, Massachusetts), and Statue of Wendell Phillips, as well as List of public art in Boston and Template:Public art in Boston. I'll be continuing work on Boston's public art in the next couple months and invite any project members to help out! Could be a fun little collaboration. :)
Thanks, and happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 18:52, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
Task force?
Should WikiProject Public Art be converted into a task force of WikiProject Visual arts?
The necessity of this project has been questioned at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sculpture. I'm not advocating for merging or maintaining a standalone project, but I'm pinging folks in Category:WikiProject Public art participants for feedback.
What do project members prefer? Pros and cons for merging vs. staying independent? Let's discuss! ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:44, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

I see User:Tom (LT) has marked this project as "semi-active". Do any project members object? Thoughts on converting to a task force? Hard for me to accept there's limited interest in public art on Wikipedia. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:14, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- I think this project saw it's heyday when we started it initially, years and years ago. At this point I'd just merge it into WP Visual art. Missvain (talk) 16:10, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping, I hope that status update was not taken too hard - I just happened to notice there was not that much activity in these parts. To be honest I think task forces are often better for these sorts of clearly defined areas. That’s because there’s more editors that can become involved and because the time spent maintaining a task force vs project is much less. Au revoir! Advice sought on copyright ownership and public sculptures
The State of Minnesota owns the copyright as well as the sculptures of the memorials on the Minnesota State Capitol Mall lawn. While they are understandably not willing to release the copyright of the sculptures there is interest in providing high-resolution photos of the monuments to Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons on the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license for Wikipedia and the public to use. I have been looking around to see what forms or protocol needs to be completed for this to happen but I have not been successful. Do you know of how to go about this? or what forms are needed? Is this even possible? Myotus (talk) 17:58, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources
I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (
John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.
)
and turns it into something like
- John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14.
It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.
The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Should WikiProject Public Art be converted into a task force of WikiProject Visual arts?
There does not seem to be much interest in keeping as a standalone WikiProject. --Another Believer (Talk) 14:13, 22 April 2022 (UTC)
- I'd say yes, it seems there aren't active members anymore. P1221 (talk) 07:30, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- Yes! It's not active enough to be a standalone WP and could benefit from instead being a task force of a larger WP. — Golden call me maybe? 17:38, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- It was always kept going by a couple of people. If they've left I don't see the point in calling it a "task force". Might as well mark it as inactive & refer people to the main VA project. I was never all that happy with the distinction anyway. Almost all the art we cover is "public" in most senses. Johnbod (talk) 23:18, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
- I assume the practical advantage of this is that it would reduce the number of talk page banners; currently the talk page for an article on a public sculpture is going to have {{WikiProject Public Art}}, {{WikiProject Sculpture}} and {{WikiProject Visual arts}} (and no doubt some have missed one or more, so a merger would help there). I would welcome a reduction in the number of these. The only thing is that this WikiProject has task forces of its own; most are moribund but I still use Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/London (WP:PALon) quite heavily, particularly the Wikidata lists there. So if this project were made a task force of WP:WPVA the talk page banner for articles in that task force would read "WikiProject Visual arts / Public Art / London". (The switch there from sentence-case "Visual arts" to title-case "Public Art" is unfortunate.) I don't know whether three levels of project instead of two would cause problems. (Extra-long page names for sub-pages of WP:PALon? What do you call a task force of a task force?) It might be more straightforward to make WP:SCULPT a task force of WP:WPVA instead – again, the only practical difference I know of would be one less talk page banner. Ham II (talk) 07:38, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Ham II: I see how this complicates things for PALon. Though, PALon could become a task force of WikiProject London, if that's easier (Wikipedia:WikiProject London/Public art). Just a thought. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:17, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Another Believer: Good point, and one I hadn't thought of. Possibly some PALon articles haven't been tagged with {{WikiProject London}}, so a merger might help there, too. And I see that {{WikiProject New York City}} has long had a parameter for Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art/NYC (which was apparently never linked to from the home page or the task forces page of Wikipedia:WikiProject Public Art!!). Ham II (talk) 06:49, 28 April 2022 (UTC)
- The problem with all these zombie projects is that people see the banner, & may ask a question etc on Project talk, where nothing is likely to happen. The Sculpture one is marked "semi-active" - a considerable overstatement imo. Johnbod (talk) 20:40, 27 April 2022 (UTC)
- Not opposed to having a similar merge discussion for WikiProject Sculpture, but perhaps one thing at a time. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:33, 27 April 2022 (UTC)

Conversion into task force
- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.
Hi @Another Believer, I was looking at the subpages of this WikiProject, and it looks like PALon isn't the only taskforce here, but some other long-dormant task forces exist too, as subpages under a different title. See
There hasn't been any discussion on them at all. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 13:00, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- I don't think most of these were intended as "task forces", & they don't use that term. User:Ham II set up the London ones i think, & may want to comment. Johnbod (talk) 13:07, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- CX Zoom seems to be saying that there should be consultation (possibly in the form of an invitation to a centralised discussion) on the task forces' talk pages, i.e. the following:
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public art/TheArtistResearchProject (there has never been any discussion on this page)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public art/TheArtistResearchProject/TonySmith (last post in December 2018)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public art/IndianaStatehouse (last post in January 2011)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public art/Indy (one and only post by Another Believer in July 2019, advertising an RfC)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public Art/London (last post in March 2022)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public art/Milwaukee (last post by Another Believer in July 2019, advertising an RfC; otherwise the only post was in October 2010)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public Art/NYC (there has never been any discussion on this page)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public art/D.C. (last post by Another Believer in July 2019, advertising an RfC; otherwise the only post was in February 2011)
- Wikipedia:WikiProject Public art/EVolunteerPlan/IMA (there has never been any discussion on this page)
- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Public art/EVolunteerPlan/ROM (last post in September 2014)
- On this evidence I think it's reasonable to post a message on the London talk page and (possibly) the Tony Smith one.
- Something not yet discussed: what will these pages' names be if WikiProject Public Art is a task force of WikiProject Visual arts? I'd like the London one to be Wikipedia:WikiProject London/Public art (note: not Public Art). Will the inactive ones be at (e.g.) Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts/Public art/Milwaukee? Ham II (talk) 09:58, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for the ping. That is what I meant. I read above that, for London, it can be moved under WP London, but for the others I'm not sure where they go to. I think there needs to be some sort of discussion for them. And if they are moved elsewhere, then that project would have to be notified too. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 17:08, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom, Ham II, and Johnbod: Can't these all be converted into task forces of WikiProject Visual arts? Seems easier than asking all these WikiProjects if they want to "take on" a task force. Let editors of the specific task forces decide their own fate, but for now, they can just be moved to the parent of WikiProject Public Art, no? For example, move Wikipedia:WikiProject Public art/Indy to Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts/Indy. Just a thought. ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:19, 23 August 2022 (UTC)
- No, please don't rebrand the zombies by converting them into anything. Just mark them as inactive, with a pointer to the most relevant live project. Or just leave them where they are. Johnbod (talk) 21:49, 23 August 2022 (UTC)

- Per above, I believe that there is a consensus in favor of "Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts/Public art task force". I will proceed with it once 24 hours are over. Please let me know if anyone disagrees. Thanks! —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 18:55, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: I do disagree, because the sub-pages would have especially long-winded names: e.g., Wikipedia:WikiProject Public art/TheArtistResearchProject/TonySmith would become Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts/Public art task force/TheArtistResearchProject/TonySmith. This would be my order of preference:
- Ham II (talk) 19:32, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
- Fine with 3 or 4. I prefer to avoid the idea there is an active WikiProject Public art when there isn't. Johnbod (talk) 21:45, 16 October 2022 (UTC)
- Indeed, that kinda misses the point that the current WikiProject is being merged into another as a task force. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 06:50, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- @CX Zoom: Fair point; I'm happy to go with #3. Ham II (talk) 08:03, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

- Per the updates above, I believe that there is a consensus in favor of "Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts/Public art" (without explicitly referring to as a task force). Again, I hope to proceed with it once 24 hours are over. Please let me know if anyone disagrees. Thanks! —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 16:42, 20 October 2022 (UTC)
- No objections raised, so moving ahead with "Wikipedia:WikiProject Visual arts/Public art". —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 13:46, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Ham II: For the time being, I've created Category:WikiProject Public Art pages needing to be recategorised under WikiProject London for merger which would populate with pages of WP:PALon that are currently using {{WikiProject Public Art}}. I'll tranfer them all over to the new Template:WikiProject London. Once done, possibly by tomorrow, I'll continue. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 16:52, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
- I've now emptied that category by changing all London public art articles to {{WikiProject London}}. If someone decides to use those parameters in the future it will populate Category:Pages using WikiProject Public Art banner with deprecated parameters which will remain there until the parent banner is redirected to Visual arts banner once all existing transclusions are modified. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 06:39, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

- {{WikiProject Public Art}} currently does not supports "importance" parameter. Do we need a importance parameter when merged into {{WikiProject Visual arts}} or not? —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 08:31, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
- Absolutely not, as {{WikiProject Visual arts}} doesn't have them. Johnbod (talk) 15:28, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
- @User:Johnbod: importance parameter of task forces is independent of its parent WikiProject. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 16:55, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
- Well it would be odd, and i'd still advise against it in any case, not that it matters at all. Johnbod (talk) 18:00, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

petscan:23413558 shows a list of 2334 pages that have {{WikiProject Visual arts}} on it, but not {{WikiProject Public Art}}. Should I just add the public art banner or manual review is required? —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 14:11, 5 December 2022 (UTC)- 3 days and no replies yet, so I guess this is what I will be doing. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 18:55, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Argh, why?? Most VA pages shouldn't have the PA one (I'm surprized the number without isn't larger) and really, what use is adding it. It waws normally only added to sculpture on the streets, and hasn't been much use for them. I'd be inclined to leave things as they are. Johnbod (talk) 19:13, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Johnbod: I'm sorry I just wrote the exact opposite of what I intended to say. The original comment would be "petscan:23413558 shows a list of 2334 pages that have {{WikiProject Public Art}} on it, but not {{WikiProject Visual arts}}. Should I just add the visual art banner on them or manual review is required?" —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 19:21, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Ah! Thanks. In the meantime I'd looked at the list & they nearly all seem right for PA & all ok for VA. So yes, ok to add the lot. Johnbod (talk) 20:21, 8 December 2022 (UTC)
- Public art has already become a WikiProject banner parameter under visual arts. So the change would basically be
{{WikiProject Public Art|class=xyz}}
→{{WikiProject Visual arts|public-art=yes|class=xyz}}
—CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 19:25, 8 December 2022 (UTC)- @Johnbod: please see User:CX Zoom/TestPage30. It lists some petscan queries that, if resolved, will make it very to complete this process. There are some 55 articles that have one quality rating on public art and another quality on visual arts. To merge, both should have the same quality rating or one could be used to override the quality rating of another. What to do here? The rest can be automated using AWB. —CX Zoom[he/him] (let's talk • {C•X}) 09:19, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
