@JulHdd We are all volunteers, so some editors may not reply. I have added a button to your draft at Draft:George_Labaki to allow you to submit it for review. qcne (talk) 14:12, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
Image now on Commons

Hi all

I can see that the book cover for The Climate Book is added to the article under fair use, however the graphic used as the front cover is an image available under CC BY 4.0 by Ed Hawkins (climatologist), in fact all his graphics for this project are uploaded on Commons here. Specifically the cover is the graphic for worldwide warming from 1850-2021, which is the main image on the Show Your Stripes website with the license clearly marked on the page.

I think its reasonable to say that adding the text of the book title and author over the top doesn't reach the threshold for originality to claim copyright. Please could someone who knows how to handle images hosted on Wikipedia change the license?

Thanks very much

John Cummings (talk) 13:57, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Can confirm. Gnom (talk) 14:53, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
Thanks Gnom :) I think that means I can just upload it to Commons then. I'll do that. John Cummings (talk) 14:55, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Finding the dates of photographs?

Hello all, I am hoping to find the dates that both this photograph and this photograph of the SS Dixie Arrow was taken. I got both of them off this website, which lists the photographers (John L. Lochhead and William B. Taylor respectively) but not the dates they were taken. Reverse searching the images brings up nothing for me. I am interested in finding the dates of said photographs to add to the article so that they can go in the proper paragraphs of the service section. I am also concerned that these images may not fall under free use and may violate copyright if they were taken in the 1930s. Help and guidance here would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance. -Emily (PhoenixCaelestis) (talk) 14:44, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Maybe try searching for information about the photographers themselves to see when they died (assuming they're not still alive and centenarians)?
Edit: It looks as though you might be able to contact the website author to ask him—see the About Me page. Musiconeologist (talk) 19:44, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for finding that, I had done some poking around on the website myself and was unable to find a page with contact information. I'll go ahead and do that. -Emily (PhoenixCaelestis) (talk) 20:10, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
I went to the home page then guessed that "Index" might be a site map, and it was. :-) Musiconeologist (talk) 20:16, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
Can't believe I missed that, thank you again. -Emily (PhoenixCaelestis) (talk) 20:43, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
You're welcome! (And it's possible to miss anything.) Musiconeologist (talk) 21:09, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

To editor BHOOTHNAATH: Please read the item at this link: image copyright FAQ. You may also want to have a look at this link. For the project to accept a photo, it must be licensed under a copyright license allowing anyone to reuse it (not just Wikipedia). Generally this means whoever took the image has to do this—or if they took it as part of their job, their employer. They need to submit a copyright release by following the instructions at this page. If you have more questions after reading those pages you're welcome to ask them here. --Slowking Man (talk) 21:00, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Photo question

I would like to know how to insert a photograph in a biography properly (Yvonne Thornton). The photograph is 60 years old (of me and my sisters), the photographer (James J. Kriegsmann) is deceased. How do I go about getting the proper permission to use the photograph in the biography? Thank you.

Inserting an old photograph into a biography. What is the proper procedure regarding copyright, attributing proper credit, etc.? Yvonne S. Thornton (talk) 21:35, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Hello, Yvonne S. Thornton. Copyright law is highly complex but a photo taken 60 years ago is probably still copyrighted. If the photo was a "work for hire" for use in a publication, then that publication is probably the copyright holder. If Kriegsmann was not a staff photographer, then he was probably the copyright holder and since he has died, his estate probably still holds the copyright. Perhaps you can approach his children if he had any to see if they control the rights to his photography, and whether they would be willing to freely license the photo. Please note that I used the word "probably" several times in my answer because there are many complex factors that could affect the status of this photo, and I am relying only on the limited information that you have provided and my limited lay knowledge of the law. Thank you SO much! Yvonne S. Thornton (talk) 17:29, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
Good news!! I took your advice, went online, found his son and called him. He said he would grant permission via email. Hooray!! This is fantastic. Thank you again. Yvonne S. Thornton (talk) 17:54, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
There's more information on donating copyrighted materials that you and Kriegsmann's son may want to read before submitting the photo for donation. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 18:52, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

I appreciate the additional information. I will pass it along to Mr. Kriegsmann. Thank you. Yvonne S. Thornton (talk) 03:54, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
Apparently James J. Kriegsmann died in 1994. TSventon (talk) 06:20, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
@Yvonne S. Thornton While you are thinking of photos, perhaps you could upload to Commons a higher-resolution image than the one you kindly provided in 2010 to act as the lead image in your biography. Modern cameras do selfies very well. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:00, 6 March 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for your idea. Yvonne S. Thornton (talk) 17:29, 7 March 2025 (UTC)

Main page error

Ōfunato wildfire on the main page shows "grows to become the largest in the country's history." There was some debate on the Talk page - which I think was resolved as it could be the largest but there is no source available currently to prove - no source states explicitly that it is the "largest". Onemillionthtree (talk) 21:37, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

@Onemillionthtree: the place for mainpage errors is WP:ERRORS and there is already a discussion about this item there. TSventon (talk) 22:50, 5 March 2025 (UTC)
